社交場合裡，我們經常會因客觀情況而無法赴朋友之約，只能抱歉地說一句「改日再約」。英語裡，我們常用的一個類似表達則是「take a rain check」。
take a rain check，字面意思是「拿一張雨票」，rain check有「雨票」的意思。在中國，我們只聽說過「糧票」、「布票」等，而這裡的「雨票」則與之類似。此說法最早起源於美國的棒球運動，我們一起來看看習語字典裡是怎麼說的吧～
The literal sense of rain check, which is an Americanism, is first found in the 1880s in reference to a baseball game. The practice of giving a rain check to a ticketholder was formalized in 1890 in the constitution of the National League. In other words, if it rained (something the purchaser had no influence over) and the game was postponed, the ticketholder could come back for another game.

由此可見，由於下雨推遲了棒球比賽，觀眾因此會得到一張「rain check」，作為下場比賽入場的憑證。
take a rain check也就有了「改日再約」的意思，用於禮貌拒絕此次邀約，同時又對下次要約表示積極意思。詞典裡對此習語用法的解釋如下：
In social interactions, a polite way to turn down an invitation, with the implication one is simply postponing it and that another time would be acceptable.
如何運用？
當你的外國朋友對你說：
「Why don’t we take a rain check?」
你應該怎麼回答？
曾經有人問我，是不是可以說：
「I hope it rains then」, or 「I hope it doesn’t rain then」.
這樣的回答顯然是停留在字面意思，也顯然是錯誤的！
相反，你可以說：
「That’s okay. We』ll do it another time.」 or
「Sure. Let me know when you’re free next time.」

[1] I can’t go with you to the museum this Saturday, but can I take a rain check and go some other day?
[2] I'm sorry, Mimi, I'm just too exhausted to go out tonight. Could I take a rain check and do it another time?
