提到「go out」很多人的第一反應都是「出去」，但大多數人也只知道這一個意思。其實，「go out」不只有「出去」的意思，作為一種比較常見的表達，如果會錯意了可能會很尷尬。今天，普特君就和大家詳細說一說。
①（尤指為了去娛樂）外出，出門參加社交活動
英文釋義：to leave a room or building, especially in order to do something for entertainment
Do you want to go out for a drink after work?
你下了班想不想到外面喝一杯？
It's terribly smoky in here - I'm just going out for a breath of fresh air.
這裡面烏煙瘴氣的——我只是出去呼吸一下新鮮空氣。
Please close the door as you go out.
你出去玩的時候請把門關上。
這個表達後面可以加動詞ing形式。
She goes out partying with her friends every weekend.
她每個周末都出去跟朋友聚會。
②（與某人）談戀愛（通常有性關係）
英文釋義：to have a romantic and usually sexual relationship with someone
這種說法很容易和「出去」混淆，如果別人說的是「談戀愛」，但你理解成了「出去」，就有點尷尬了。比如下面這個例句，想表達的是他離婚後沒有再談戀愛，如果理解成離婚後再沒出去過，就有些離譜了。所以理解的時候一定要注意語境。
He hasn't gone out with anyone since he got divorced two years ago.
他兩年前離婚後沒有和任何人談過戀愛。
How long have you been going out with him?
你跟他戀愛有多長時間了？
They'd been going out (together/with each other) for almost five years before he moved in with her.
在他搬過來和她同居之前，他們已經戀愛了將近5年。
③退潮，落潮
英文釋義：If the tide goes out, it moves back and covers less of the beach.

只有退潮後，你才能看到海灘。
④熄滅
英文釋義：If a light or something that is burning goes out, it stops producing light or heat.
When I woke up the fire had gone out.
當我醒來時，火已經熄了。
⑤（在比賽中）被淘汰，出局
英文釋義：to lose when you are playing in a sports competition, so that you must stop playing in the competition
England went out to France in the second round of the championship.
錦標賽第二輪比賽中英格蘭隊被法國隊淘汰出局。
再來了解一些和「go out」相關的俚語和短語表達。
go out (of) the window 完全消失，不再存在
Then people start drinking and sense goes out of the window.
人們開始喝酒，理性不復存在。
go out for sth 試圖加入（體育隊伍）
Unable to play ball with his hand in a cast, he went out for track.
因為手上打著石膏不能玩球，他參加了徑賽。
go out of your way （特別是為其他人）非常努力地做

go out to sb 同情（某人）
Our deepest sympathies go out to her husband and children.
我們向她的丈夫和孩子表示深切地同情。
最後我們再來說說「out」和「outside」的區別。單從字面意思看，兩個單詞意思差不多，有很多同學經常將這兩個詞混用。但是它們的意思真的不一樣！
「outside」是一個比較具象的詞，一般指在建築物或空間附近的外面。而「out」就比較抽象。
He is outside.
這句話是說，他在房子或者辦公室外面，不在裡面，有可能是在外面打電話，抽菸或者聊天等等。
He is out.
而這句話的意思是指他出去辦事去了，不知道在哪，反正不在家裡，或者辦公室。
如果你打電話找XX，對面接電話的人告訴你：
He is outside. 在外面。（那說明他應該很快回電。）
He is out. 出去了，不知道會不會回來。（可能不會很快回電。）
我們經常所說的「出去吃；下館子」，正確的表達應該是「eat out」。如果你說「eat outside」其實強調的是空間，在屋外（戶外）吃。
out to lunch
「out to lunch」從字面看，意思是「出去吃午飯」，但它真正的意思是指「瘋狂的；神志不清的；過時的；懶散的」，理解起來也很簡單，中文中有句諷刺人的話叫做，「你腦子忘在家裡了」，形容那些注意力沒在這裡的人們。這句英文也是說，「你出去吃飯了吧，腦子都沒在這裡」。
You must have been out to lunch when you wrote that weird report.
當你做這個奇怪報告的時候，你一定是神志不清的。
