2.Retail sales are different from whole sales(估計習慣用中文「學」英語的人根本沒有能力見到英語retail sales能主動「使用」英語whole sales這個詞，除非他的「中文思維」裡首先出現了要用英語表達的「批發業」這個中文意思。

除非我們腦子裡首先出現中文「新冠肺炎」，否則，不會有多少人見pandemic時會主動說得出coronavirus,Covi-19這些英語。這就正是英譯漢式「英語閱讀」不給我們「使用」英語的體現。

說老實話，孤立去看單詞，我也和你完全一樣：完全「不知道」英語spook「什麼意思」。但是，這絕對不是我去查英漢詞典「知道」它的中文意思的理由。通過上下文，我就能「知道」它的英語意思。

我是這麼「讀懂」它的：

2. But markets around the world were spooked by the figures

That means the FIGURES in different countries are different.Your figure is better than mine.Mibe figure is better than his.

So,To be spooked by maybe means be different from one another.

不一定十分準確，但通過上下文看：差不離。

能長期這麼「英譯英」式「英語閱讀」，說實話，有沒有英語語言環境無所謂了。
