圈子裡對申請美國本科常見的文書做了分類，一般有主文書，why major文書，why school文書，活動文書。
主文書，一般來說指的是commonapp和coalition系統上的那篇文書，因為絕大部分學校都可以通過這兩個系統來申請，所以這篇文書的通用性很強。再詳細一點，主文書就是指申請主系統的文書，對應的就是每個學校自己的附表，這個上面也有文書，就叫附表文書，也就是這兩系統上，每個學校單獨需要的文書。
主文書也有叫PS的，像賓州州立使用自己的申請系統，就有一個文書要求，而且就叫personal statement。但是，PS一般是指申請美國研究生的文書；申請其他國家，例如英國、加拿大，也是用PS。類似的還有中國香港的大學，也是需要PS。
Why major文書是最常見的附表文書之一，有些學校只有這個文書要求，例如伊利諾伊大學香檳分校。問的就是為什麼申請這個專業。具體我在以後的文書裡展開。
Why school文書是比why major文書還常見的附表文書，特別是文理學院的申請，基本每個學校都有這個要求。一般問的就是為什麼要申請這所大學，部分學校本科階段有好幾個學院，那就改成為什麼申請這個學院。
活動文書，最常見的就是要學生詳細描述一個課外活動或者工作經歷。這個文書曾經是commonapp系統上的必寫文書之一，現在改了。這文書的特點是：一般是頂尖的大學才需要，字數要求一般不長。
上面這4個文書題目是申請美國本科最常見的文書類型，可以說八成學校的文書不會超過這4篇文書。這裡，借著上一期介紹西北大學的文章，我說一下why school文書。前10學校和常春藤學校裡，有這要求的如下：

從上面這幾所學校的題目要求，其實我們就能總結一下這類型文書的要求

如果做一個簡單的數學上的統計，會發現，大部分學校問的內容和課程、專業有關。這裡的a particular kind of learning，intellectual and academic interests，college’s program，intellectual curiosity就是專業興趣。所以，why school類型文書最常見、也是最直接的寫法，就是從why major的角度去寫。上面我說了，why major這類型文書也是申請美國最常見的文書，所以，從why major文書的角度去寫why school不僅扣題，而且省事！
但是呢，一說到專業，其實就會聯想到職業教育，而說到職業教育，就會想到與之對應的通識教育。而，我在之前介紹學校的文章裡說過，其實美國最頂尖的大學是強調通識教育的。所以，對某些學校來說，特別是頂尖大學，特別是那些強調通識教育的頂尖大學來說，這文書又不能從專業角度去寫。
那還剩下什麼選擇呢？還是從上面看。Community, and future，campus environment，curriculum，這幾個就是專業之外的。也就是說，可以從學校的地理環境、人文環境、學校課程等方面去說。我舉兩個例子。
哥倫比亞大學，如果去仔細瀏覽學校官網，看學校的各種官方和學生論壇，以及看各大平臺上的在讀學生反饋，這學校非常引以為豪的東西是兩個：Core Curriculum和New York city。前者就是課程，後者是地理環境。正好一個內部學術、一個外部環境。這兩個應該就是成就一個學校最重要的兩方面了。所以，關於哥倫比亞的這個why school，一般建議都是從這兩個方面去寫的。我在介紹哥倫比亞大學的時候，說過，這個學校在中國二三線城市招生很少，或許就和這個有關吧。（一線城市環境培養的國際視野，某些帖子這麼說）
同理，紐約大學的文書要求也是問為什麼申請紐約大學。最省事的就是why major文書來寫。最直觀的，就是寫地理環境！這是紐約大學最大的特點，也是最大的資本！這學校的藝術學院，電影學院，商學院強，就是地理位置賦予的。
那，其他學校呢？例如，西北大學？
關於這點，網上、學校官網、招生官眾說紛紜。我調查過很多錄取學生的文書，內容很雜，但是以學術類的為主。這裡說的學術類，不只是專業相關的。例如，西北大學特別鼓勵學生修多個專業。所以，西北畢業的學生，很多是修兩個專業的，有不少修三個專業的，甚至有四個專業的。這點在很多其他學校是不推薦的，或者說，很難的。反過來想，能這麼修專業的，肯定都是學霸型的。所以，說西北大學招收的都是學霸，這一點都不為過。（區別於其他頂尖大學要求的領導力啊、關注社會正義之類的）
關於why school類型文書，我再強調一點：注意這篇文書裡自己部分和學校部分的比例！大原則是：一定要把自己的部分和學校的部分結合起來。在這個原則下：一定要注意兩個的比例問題。最常見的錯誤，不是不寫學校的相關內容，而是學校的內容太多！寫成了介紹學校的文書！
舉個中國家長最愛看的例子，為什麼申請卡耐基梅隴大學的計算機專業。以500字英文文書為例，至少要有300字關於自己為什麼對計算機專業感興趣，加上自己目前已經在計算機方面做得事情，後200字可以寫卡耐基梅隴大學計算機學院提供的課程、實習和科研機會以及這所大學周邊可以利用的資源，例如實習機會，例如學校給創業提供的資源等。
關於why school類型文書，最不建議的寫法是：學校好、排名高、就業好！
可惜的是，大部分學生家長對大學的認識，基本就限於這幾點！而且，關心的也就這幾點。
