On a recent Saturday, Vinícius Sanctus, 39, and Alessandro Russo, 28, could be seen coasting down the city's main thoroughfares on a pair of broomsticks, each one attached to a single motorized wheel.
In motion, the contraptions look uncannily like the brooms used by witches and wizards in the Harry Potter universe.
To steer, the duo simply lean in the direction they wish to travel. While it takes a bit of practice at first, the broomsticks, which can reach top speeds of 60 kilometers per hour (37 mph), are useful for day-to-day urban living, they say.
"I use my broom as a means of transportation nowadays. And it's so fun." said Russo.
So far, the brooms for Muggles - non-magic people - are largely limited to personal use, but Russo and Sanctus have plans to market and sell the broomsticks, which cost about 4,000 reais ($740) each.
"Our final goal is to sell the brooms to the world and maybe create a new variation of Quidditch," said Russo. "And it'll look a lot like the one played in the Harry Potter movies."

Sirio Persichetti can't speak and can't feed himself but the seven-year-old has taken the social media world by storm with his daily antics, proving that a disability is no barrier to inspiring others.
Sirio Persichetti
Sirio has spastic tetraplegia, a form of cerebral palsy that affects the movement of three limbs.
Sirio
His mouth is permanently open, blocking him from forming words properly or swallowing. He is fed liquid nutrition through a tube in his stomach and has had a tracheotomy to help him breathe.
He bears this with such resilience, vivacity and lust for life that it prompted his mother Valentina to create a website and Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts to chronicle his everyday life in hopes of inspiring others.
The response has been overwhelming, with some videos getting more than 130,000 views.
"In a short time the response, especially from families living in similar situations, was powerful and exciting so we decided to keep going," Valentina said.
She posts videos of Sirio going to school carrying a backpack almost as big as he is, or driving a toy electric car or mercilessly waking up his older brother Nilo, 10.
Valentina said she wanted to break the stigma that often surrounds disability by showing that having special needs does not mean an end to fun for a child.

Jorge Roriz, 65, used to create the magical world of Rio de Janeiro's Carnival with its colorful costumes and fantastic floats.
Now, in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, he is using his art to make masks that don't attempt to disguise or accentuate but to be as real as possible.
Roriz paints face masks that are so accurate as to be uncanny. As he speaks wearing his mask, his mouth, like that of a ventriloquist, does not appear to move.
"I use this mask in order not to lose my identity," Roriz said.
He paints the person's lower face on to a white mask, taking time over the details like skin hue and lips.
The masks have become popular with people who don't want to hide their face during the pandemic but are keen to protect themselves against the virus.
"It's vital that people look after themselves, it's good that people use masks," he said.
Roriz
"I've had a really positive reaction, people laugh. Something that was meant to be sad became something that brings joy."
