A Story of English Surnames
Long long ago, two men lived in the same village, and they had the same name. Their names were Joe and Joe. One Joe had to be distinguished somehow from the other. One Joe was a baker, the other Joe was a carpenter. People called the baker Joe Baker and called the carpenter Joe Carpenter. Hence Baker and Carpenter became two surnames.
