Scientists: Time running short before climate changeeffects are 』irreversible』
Globaltemperatures could reach an irreversible tipping point in just 12 years if theworld doesn’t act dramatically to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide releasedinto the atmosphere, scientists warned in a new report.
The direassessment puts the spotlight on President Donald Trump and theRepublican-controlled Congress. Trump and many of his most ardent supporters inCongress have questioned man-made climate change and the president could remainin office for nearly half the time the scientists say is crucial for action.
The UnitedNations panel on climate change says the impact of climate change can still beslowed down if countries around the world take unprecedented action to reducetheir use of fossil fuels and release less carbon dioxide and other greenhousegases into the air.
But the UnitedStates government has not supported aggressive climate policies under the Trumpadministration.
President Trumpdecided to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Climate Agreement – an accord wherecountries pledged to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The currentadministration has moved to roll back most of the climate-oriented policiesproposed by the Obama administration, proposing replacements in some caseswhich experts said won’t go as far toward reducing emissions.
TheEnvironmental Protection Agency declined to comment on the UN report’s findingson Monday.
The UnitedStates continues to lead the world in greenhouse gas reductions having reducedour emissions by 14 percent since 2005, an EPA spokesman said in a statement,
The UN panel’sresearchers found that 「human caused」 carbon dioxide emissions need to be cutby nearly half of 2010 levels by 2030 to stave off the worst effects of climatechange. Scientists said 「rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in allaspects of society」 are required to limit the possibility of irreversibleenvironmental damage.
