If the rest of the industry pursues evenmodest growth, the consequence for the climate could be disastrous.

For much of the 20th century, the fiveoil majors—Chevron, ExxonMobil, Royal Dutch Shell, BP and Total—had more clout thansome small countries. Although the majors』 power haswaned, they stillaccount for10% of global oil and gas output and 16% of upstream investment. Theyset the tonefor smaller, privately owned energy firms. And millions ofpensionersand other savers rely on their profits. Of the 20 firms paying the biggestdividendsin Europe and America, four are majors.

It would be wrong to conclude that the energy firms must therefore be evil. They are responding toincentivesset by society. Thefinancial returnsfrom oil are higher thanthosefromrenewables. For now, worldwide demand for oil is growing by 1-2% a year,similar tothe average over the past five decades—and the typical majorderivesa minority ofits stockmarket valuefromprofits it will make after 2030. However much the majors arevilified byclimate warriors, many of whom drive cars and take planes.
