【寫作必備】At large到底什麼意思?

我們知道, at large既可以做後置定語, 也可以做表語, 但兩者表達含義完全不同, 一起來了解:

1.  at large作後置定語, 表示的含義是 「整個，總地」 或」一般地」:

That will be very good for Zynga and Facebook, but it may not be so good for the stock market at large.

這對Zynga和Facebook來說都是大好事,但對於股市整體來說卻未必是福。

He hopes to reach the public at large, not necessarily practicing architects.

他希望藝術節能影響到廣大公眾,而不僅僅局限於建築從業者。

2. at large做表語成分, 則表示 「未被捕獲的，自由的」的意思:

The soldier reported that a prisoner was at large.

士兵報告說有一個囚犯在逃。

He said he would keep the beard, untrimmed,as long as bin Laden remains at large —"even if I get buried with it."

維德爾表示,只要賓·拉登還逍遙法外,他就會將鬍子繼續留下去且不打理——「即使我被鬍鬚埋葬」。
