現在，不僅是中國，全世界都在討論「霧霾」問題。然而，你真的會用英語向別人講述這個對我們環境危害最大的「壞傢伙」嗎？
這個詞你應該不會陌生，以前當你還在學校學習時，老師就說這個詞是霧的意思。然而，霧也包括霧霾嗎？
Fog: cloudy air near the ground which is difficult to see through.
例：
We got lost in the thick fog.
A blanket of fog covered the fields.
The fog lifted in the afternoon.
其實fog這個詞並沒特指「因空氣汙染造成的毒霧」。如果你和老外說盤在天上的東西是fog，老外一定會覺得你大驚小怪，就是一點霧而已有什麼好害怕的？在他們的眼中fog是一種自然現象而非是工業汙染的產物。
這個詞可能知道的人會比較少，被使用的頻率也較低。不過，如果說fog是霧的話，那haze就是霾的意思。
Haze: smoke, dust, or mist in the air which is difficult to see through.
例：
The sun was surrounded by a golden haze.
The foothills were looming ahead through the haze.
I couldn't see her through the haze of smoke.
或許你不清楚霧和霾的區別。簡單來說，霧是液體小顆粒，霾是固體小顆粒。不過，霧和霾加在一起絕非是「霧霾」，至少不是我們公認的有毒害的、嚴重影響中國環境的壞傢伙。所以，說haze或者fog and haze並不是霧霾的準確說法。
你會想，smoke是煙的意思，怎麼和霧霾扯上了關係？但是你知道煙和我們所見的霧霾之間的聯繫嗎？
Smoke: white, grey or black gas that is produced by something burning.
例：
Smoke from burning fields drifted across nearby roads.
They were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
The smoke from that factory is noxious.
其實比起前兩種自然現象，smoke其實更加接近霧霾的本質。因為從工廠排放出的有毒有害的煙就是smoke。不過，smoke本身並不是我們所見的霧霾，它更有可能是霧霾的「元兇」。
其實「霧霾」的正確答案就是：
地球上本沒有smog，正是因為工業時代的到來，讓有毒害的霧霾誕生了。為了區別於自然現象，英國人給這來源於smoke、像fog一樣的東西拼出了一個新詞，smog（smoke + fog）。專門用來指代由於工業汙染所產生的骯髒霧霾。
Smog: dirty air that looks like a mixture of smoke and fog, caused by smoke from cars and factories in cities.
例：
Cars cause pollution, both smog and acid rain.
The sky over the city was overspread with a heavy smog.
12,000 people were killed by the Great Smog of 1952 in London.
如果你對西方文化比較了解，就一定聽聞過「英語聖地」倫敦的一個「雅號」：霧都。為什麼要叫它霧都？不是因為fog或haze，而是因為過度工業化帶來的嚴重後果：smog。
