Traditional Chinese always say, 「The wise cultivates the mind instead of the circumstance. The foolish cultivates the circumstance instead of the mind.」 Whatever conditions we are in, if they are adverse and forming obstacles, we must adjust our mind if the environment is not changed.
The German master of literature Gothe said, 「Life is like a mirror. If you smile at it, it smiles back. If you cry in front of it, it cries to you too.」
The same thing can be perceived differently by different people. Different perceptions cause different feelings about it.
Let us take a look at a poem in the 「Ding Feng Bo」genre. It was written by Su Shi on a rainy and windy day when he was expatriated with a lowered rank of officialdom to Huanggang in Hubei Province. It goes,
Not listening to the leaf-hitting sound while crossing the woods
I continue to sing and chant while walking ahead slowly.
The bamboo crane and straw shoes are lighter than the horse.
Who cares?
A life wearing a straw (coir) raincoat on a misty rainy day is just as good.
These stanzas form the first half of the poem. They reflect the calm and aloofness of the author in the midst of a naturally and (for him) politically rainy day.
The second half of the poem describes his even more transcendent attitude to the point he does not even have any thoughts of the ongoing rain and wind. It reflects his broadmindedness in face of the alternating glory and shame in life.
The chilly spring wind wakes me up from the alcoholic effects,Which allows me to see the hilltop facing me in the sunshine.
Looking back at the rustle in the air,I see it is neither rainy, windy nor sunny.
In fact Su Shi wrote many poems in the same genre. He was expelled to Linnan and then to Hainan, and finally was summoned back to the capital and offered a position in the imperial academy. One of his friends Wang Dingguo was also recalled from Linnan to the capital. Seeing each other again in person, the two were very delighted. Wang Dingguo asked his attending concubine named Rounu to serve drinks to Su Shi.
Su Shi asked Rounu, 「Your whole family was in the capital and you stayed with your master in Linnan for so many years. Were those years very tiring? 」
Rounu replied quietly, 「My home is where my mind is at ease.」 Hearing this Su Shi marveled at the transcendental life attitude such a seemingly fragile woman revealed. Right away, Su Shi wrote a Ding Feng Bo poem to express his appreciation.
The second half of it goes,
Coming back from thousands of miles of the journey
She still looks young.
When smiling, she still conveys the fragrance of the plum from Linnan.
I asked her whether Linnan was good or not.
She replied that her home is where her mind is at ease.
So, being at ease with whatever one encounters means to be at peace and free from whatever one comes across. In fact, the external environment is a reflection of our mental status. If our mind is peaceful, then the external environment cannot harm or disturb us. On the other hand, if our mind is full of craving, anger and ignorance, full of greedy and angry emotions, then the external environment will harm us easily.
