Is it true that Saudi Arabia imports sands from Australia? If so, why?
Saudi Arabia may be a sandy desert, but the sand is not of the right quality for sandblasting, types of construction, etc. There was a Saudi Company that imported a disused glass making factory from the US in order to make glass windows locally rather than import. Unfortunately it was not till the plant arrived that they realized that the sand in Saudi Arabia was not suitable for glass making! Even in the Gulf War sand was imported for making sand bags.
Australia has a very well established mineral sands industry, in particular for extraction of rutile (titanium dioxide) for production of paints and pigments.
As interestingly, Australia also exports camels to the Saudis.
In 2008 the number of feral camels was estimated to be more than one million, with the capability of doubling in number every 8–10 years.
