The average U.S. worker today earns roughly $46,641 a year, according to data from the Social Security Administration. The median salary in the country, however, is only $30,533, which tells us that a greater number of people earn less than the average than more.

If you think you could do the same today, you are delusional. At 73, that means you were born in 1945 and entered the workforce in about 1965....and retired in about 2005. You really could not have timed it any better.

Life is much harder today than it was 50 years a ago from a financial stand point. A man could work a normal job and support a family of 4 or 5 with no college degree. Life was much slower, I wish I would have been born in the 30's. Now both parents have to work and still scrape by and life is so fast and stressful. My wife and I each make almost $90k with just a 2 year degree (nursing and software development). We didn’t start with that salary of course but my point is it’s not that difficult to learn a skill that can earn you a decent living.

My "Salary" is only about $23,000 a year. But I might add that I don't work since I'm retired and that is my Social Security and my wife gets close to the same! We do quite nicely, thank you very much!
