今天讀了《經濟學人》關於美國對華為禁令的文章，有許多值得學習品味的地方。

Excerpt 1

• Thanks to its high quality and low prices, Huawei’s telecoms gear is popular around the world. Not in America, where the Chinese giant is banished over (unsubstantiated) fears that it could be used by spies in Beijing to eavesdrop on Americans.

unsubstantiated很有意思，表示「無事實依據的, groundless」，就是說美國聲稱華為的設備會被用來監聽美國人，然而實際上並沒有證據支持這一說法。去掉前綴」un」，加上後綴」ful」，這個詞的同根詞」substantial」十分常見，表示「大量的，有實質內容的」。

Examples:

• This claim has remained unsubstantiated by contemporary sources.
• 依據現有資料，該說法仍無事實依據。
• The industrial relations laws were passed without substantial change.
• 該法律通過了，但沒有實質上的變化。

Excerpt 2

• Last year the Department of Commerce (DOC) barred American firms from selling Huawei chips made in America, which oxygenate swathes of theglobal semiconductor industry.

Bar, 除了「棒，酒吧」的意思，還可以是動詞，表示「禁止」

Oxygenate, 供氧，一般後面接血液或水，這裡指美國的晶片對於全球半導體產業很重要。

Swathes, 一長條田地；swathes of, 很大部分。

Examples（從語料庫裡摘過來了一些，感受一下，可以看到後面跟土地或人口之類的，文章裡接產業）

• Huge swathes of land have been put under quarantine.
• He destroyed vast swathes of land that never recovered.
• But large swathes of this enormous city are dark.
• All utilities were knocked out across large swathes of the island.
• Several shots of shop windows with swathes of cloth displayed inside .
• These are fears of vast swathes of the population.

Excerpt 3

• Huawei’s options are limited. It could sue, claiming that the DOC’s actions contravene America’s own laws, but its two ongoing lawsuits against the American government already look like long shots.

long shot, 十分常見的說法，表示很難成功，非常沒有把握的事。這裡說華為之前對美國政府發起的訴訟看起來就很難成功，這次估計也很難起訴成功。

Examples

• It&39;t fret – there are several scholarship opportunities still available!
• We worry and fret ourselves into exhaustion.
• Nations still fret over issues that happened thousands of years ago.
• So don't fret about us here.

Excerpt 5

• American trade negotiators may want to use this power to extract concessions from China in ongoing trade talks to boost Mr Trump’s re-election chances, diminished by his mishandling of the covid-19 pandemic.
• 美國貿易談判者想要利用其權力來取得中國的讓步，從而增加川普的連任機會，因為他對於新冠病毒疫情的處理不當，已經使他的機會減少了。

Concession, 讓步

Boost, 促進，增強

Diminish, 減少，減小

Mishandling, 處理不當

Examples

• This concession has apparently produced no effect.
• Love makes concessions and gives mutual support.
• The concessionson both sides were substantial.
• Type 2 diabetes already boosts bladder cancer risk by 40%.
• Iron ore transport greatly boosted the local economy.
• Cooperation among peasants diminished during the twentieth century.
• At this point production demonstrates diminishing returns.
