《論語》八則英譯,全部來自「英文觀止」十月季的課堂,看昱先生向辜先生頂禮。
辜鴻銘(1857--1928),中國近代著名學者,學貫中西,翻譯了「四書」中的《論語》、《中庸》和《大學》,在西方形成了「到中國可以不看紫禁城,不可不看辜鴻銘」的說法。

The Analects of Confucius《論語》八則英譯
【其一】
貧而無諂,富而無驕。
——《論語·學而第一》
(辜譯)
To be poor and yet not to be servile;
to be rich and yet not to be proud.
(昱譯)
Free yourself of a subservient manner
when living in poverty,
and when affluent,
try to be absent of any contemptuousness.
(辜譯)
It is the moral life of a neighborhood
which constitutes its excellence.
(昱譯)
In a neighborhood, thou shalt observe
the beauty of virtue.
【其三】
唯仁者能好人,能惡人。
——《論語·裡仁第四》
(辜譯)
It is only men of moral character who
Know how to love men or hate men.
(昱譯)
Men of virtue, keep their boundaries between
affection and aversion.
【昱先生註解】
此語亦引用於《後漢書》。「唯」通「惟」或「維」,古發語詞,
非「唯有」、「唯一」之意。
辜鴻銘先生譯為「only」, 白璧微瑕,但瑕不掩瑜。

【其四】
君子懷德,小人懷土;君子懷刑,小人懷惠。
——《論語·裡仁第四》
(辜譯)
A wise man regards the moral-worth of a man;
a fool, only his position.
A wise man expect justice;
a fool, only expects favors.
(昱譯)
A mind of nobility values virtues as a dreamland,
while a mind of inferiority, only his homeland.
The former worships justice,
while the latter, simply grace.
【齊文昱老師註解】
參閱朱熹以來名家註疏,「小人懷土」的「土」,皆釋為故土。
故此處譯做homeland, 以求工穩。
【其五】
有君子之道四焉:
其行己也恭, 其事上也敬,
其養民也惠,其使民也義。
——《論語·公冶長第五》
(辜譯)
He showed himself to be a good and wise man in four ways.
In his conduct of himself he was earnest, and
in serving the interests of his prince he was serious.
In providing for the wants of the people, he was generous,
and in dealing with them he was just.

The philosophy of a sublime mind, is referred,
to the reverence in self-discipline,
to the conscience in serving the lord,
to the grace in treating his people,
and to the righteous bosom in using them.

知者動,仁者靜;知者樂,仁者壽。
——《論語·雍也第六》

Intellectual men are active; moral men are calm.
Intellectual men enjoy life; moral men live long.

Intelligence breeds activity; benevolence, tranquility;
The former prepares the way for joviality ; the latter, longevity.

A mind of intelligence tends to be active and blissful, as much as a

【其七】
興於詩,立於禮,成於樂。
——《論語·泰伯第八》
(辜譯)
In education sentiment is called out
by the study of poetry;
judgment is formed by the study of arts;
and education of the character is completed
by the study of music.
(昱譯)
That which is enlightened in the learning of poetry,
can be shaped into the establishment of morality,
and finally culminates in the achievement of melody.
【其八】
逝者如斯夫,不舍晝夜。
——《論語·子罕第九》
(辜譯)
How all things in nature are passing away
even like this---ceasing neither
day nor night!
(昱譯)
That streams flow, things do pass away,
incessantly, night and day.

此處看點為「That stream...」中的that,並非指示代詞,
而是功能類似於」like」的明喻提示詞。
此句譯文用倒裝,正常語序應為
Things do pass away that streams flow,...
此用法在「觀止」課中曾有專題講解。
其實辜先生一直是昱先生少年時代的偶像。
在英語教學中,昱先生也總是試圖讓學生努力領悟
東西方語言的相似和相通。
翻譯《論語》,昱先生說,
是向辜鴻銘老先生那一代大師頂禮致敬。
而且,很多時候,翻譯其實沒有高下之分,...
