這個動詞詞組， 語法作用相當於一個及物動詞（可以有被動形式to be accounted for） ， 其釋義是：

1. （主語是人或事） 解釋、 說明（其經過或理由） （是個延續狀態動詞） 。 

■e.g.  

How do you account for the dent in the car? 車身上的凹痕你又作何解釋呢？ 

That would account for his behavior. 那也許能說明他為什麼有這樣的行為。 

Bad weather accounted for the long delay. 耽擱時間那麼長， 原因是天氣惡劣。

2.（主語是人） 交代清楚（是個瞬時動態動詞） 。 

■e.g.  

I have to account for every penny I spend. 我花每一分錢都必須交代清楚。 

One thousand dollars remains to be accounted for. 還有一千美元尚未交代清楚。

Do I have to account to you for everything I do? 難道我做什麼事情都得向你交代？

You'll have to account to me for whatever happens to her. 她出了什麼事情， 我都唯你是問。

The suspect couldn't account for his time that night.  嫌疑犯無法交代那一天夜裡他幹了些什麼。

3. 查明下落（是個瞬時動態動詞） 。

■e.g.  

Kip Godwin, chairman of the Columbus County Commission, said authorities had nearly concluded their search of the area where all the deaths occurred... and had accounted for everyone. (The Associated Press, Nov. 16, 2006) 哥倫布郡委員會主席基普·戈德溫說：「當局已經對所有致死事件發生的那個地區完成了搜索…查明了所有人的下落。」

4.（被動語氣， 延續狀態） 已經知道下落。 

■e.g.  

Another 3,400 employees have made initial contact with the company but are not working and 500 are not yet accounted for. 另有3400人初步同公司取得了聯繫， 但尚未上班， 500人仍然下落不明。

We suspected thousands had been killed, and many who worked in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were not yet accounted for. 我們估計， 有好幾千人喪生， 許多在世界貿易中心和五角大樓上班的人仍然下落不明。 

accounted for這個詞組甚至成了正式的形容詞， 可以直接放在名詞前面（注意後面的名詞不是for的賓語）

■e.g. 

List of already accounted for objects. 已有下落的物品清單（最好加連字符：accounted-for） 。否定形式也可以用unaccounted for。

5.（被動語氣， 延續狀態） 已經計算在內。 

■e.g.  

These transactions are already accounted for on the balance sheet. 這些交易已經列入了收支表中。

However, these costs are often discounted within the organization because they're already accounted for in payroll

expenses. 但是， 這些成本往往在組織內是刨去的， 因為工資支出中已經計算在內了。

6.（主動語氣， 延續狀態） 佔總量當中多大的份額。 

■e.g.  

In 1991 women already accounted for more than 50％ of jobs in certain services. 1991年婦女在某些服務業中已經佔了百分之五十以上的職位。

Table 9 also shows that in some cases immigrants already accounted
