1. thunder 轟隆隆地快速移動

e.g.  On December 3rd a Falcon 9 rocket made by SpaceX thundered into the sky.

12月3日，SpaceX製造的一枚獵鷹九號火箭轟隆升空。

2. doctor 偽造，篡改

e.g. Administrators can doctor corporate accounts, delete titles from land registries or add names to party rolls.

行政管理人員可以篡改企業帳戶、刪除土地登記裡的產權、往黨派名單上添加名字。

3. hard-up 手頭緊的

e.g. The second approach to helping hard-up villages was more radical: moving inhabitants to better-connected areas.

第二種幫助貧困村莊的方法會更激進：把村民搬遷到與外界聯繫更多的地區。

4. subdued 低迷的，蕭條的

e.g. Subdued growth, rising inequalities and accelerating climate change provide the context for a backlash against capitalism, globalization, technology, and elites.

在經濟增長乏力、不平等現象日益嚴重、氣候變化不斷加速的背景下，反資本主義、反全球化、反技術和反精英主義思潮開始抬頭。

5. play ball with 與……合作

e.g. 「We have to play ball with the Chinese,」 says Joerg Wuttke, the German head of the EU chamber of commerce in China.

「我們必須與中國合作，」中國歐盟商會的德國籍主席伍德克（Joerg Wuttke）表示。

6. eke out （靠節省用量）使…的供應持久

e.g. In the past their only options were either to migrate elsewhere or to eke out a meagre existing farming maize.

過去，他們只能外出打工，或者靠種玉米勉強度日。

7. right as rain 非常健康

e.g. She' s been ill , but she' s as right as rain now.　

她病了一場，可現在她已完全恢復了健康。

8. batten down the hatches 未雨綢繆，做好準備

e.g. Recent history shows that big run-ups in property prices often reverse suddenly. Better to batten down the hatches now in case the weather turns bad.

近年的歷史表明，房價大漲後經常突然回落。最好還是未雨綢繆。
