最常用的是它的否定用法：not give a shit，意為「一點都不在乎」，相當於「I don't care.」 。
但 not give a shit 含有「不屑一顧」的意思，比「I don't care.」表達的情感要強烈一點。
❶ I don't give a shit! 我根本不屑一顧!
❷ So trust me when I say if a guy is treating you like he doesn't give a shit, he genuinely doesn't give a shit! 所以相信我說的，如果一個男人對你好像毫不在乎，那他就是真的對你毫不在乎。

比give a shit 要斯文點的表達有：give a rat's ass
（」give a shit」 的內心是憤憤不平的：憑什麼「給坨屎」是粗鄙語，而」給個老鼠屁股」就比較斯文呢？！）
❹ I don't give a rat's ass where you go. Just give me back the car by six. 我根本不想知道你去哪裡，六點前把車還給我就行了。

睡覺時睜一隻眼閉一隻眼；時刻警惕；時刻關注
sleep with one eye open 直譯為睡覺的時候睜一隻眼閉一隻眼。有些動物的睡眠就有此特性。
❺ Dolphins sleep with one eye open. 海豚睡覺關一眼關一眼。
引申意義：不敢睡得太熟，時刻警惕著。
❻ Some people think that China doesn't need to sleep with one eye open to the aging population. 有些人認為中國不必過度關注人口老齡化的問題。
