Definition: If you kick the can down the road, you delay a decision in hopes that the problem or issue will go away or somebody else will make the decision later.
Etymology: A commonly used phrase in American politics over the last few years. It refers to the practice of kicking a can ahead of oneself while walking along a road. So, metaphorically, the phrase means to defer conclusive action with a short-term solution.
The government should punish and discipline those officials who tend to kick the can down the road when dealing with thorny problems.
