Sleep tight
 當我把三歲的女兒抱到床上,對她說："Sleep tight"的時候，她卻反問我："媽媽，'Sleep tight'是什麼意思？是不是我的被子得蓋得嚴嚴（tight）的?"

其實不然，sleep tight是指睡的好，睡的香。

一位威斯徹斯特縣(Westchester County)的導遊曾介紹這個短語的來源，他說"Sleep tight"是指過去人們床板上的鬃繩，稻草的墊子就鋪在縱橫交錯的鬃繩上，鬃繩起到彈簧的作用。這些鬃繩要定期的進行繃緊，睡著才舒服，否則鬃繩則變的松松垮垮，很不舒服。

很多網站也都引用了這種說法。也有的說法說Sleep tight 的來歷和海軍有直接關係。因為海軍用的吊床只有把繩子勒緊時才會睡得舒服。

按照牛津字典的解釋，副詞tightly在17世紀晚期的意思是soundly, properly或well。莎士比亞《溫莎的風流娘兒們》（The Merry Wives of Windsor）有這樣的句子"Hold Sirha, beare you these letters tightly." 18世紀晚期tight有soundly（熟睡的）, roundly（完全的）的意思。1898瑪麗-阿奈特-馮-阿尼姆在她的《伊莉莎白和她的德國花園》(Elizabeth and Her German Garden)裡寫"She had been so tight asleep."

有一段民間兒童詩歌，其中tight的意思就是soundly。詩歌創作的具體時間無從考證，不過詩歌最後兩行明顯透露著維多利亞時代的文風。

Good night, sleep tight,
Wake up bright
In the morning light
To do what's right
With all your might.

大多數美國兒童可能對下面這段形成於19世紀的兒歌更為熟悉："Good night, sleep tight. Don't let the bed bugs bite."
