I think its an unfortunate truth that humans naturally fear or hate that which is unfamiliar or different from themselves—anything that breaks the norms of a society or maybe their concept of 『tradition.』 It seems that humans are instinctively quite xenophobic, which leads to discrimination, which leads to exclusion. When it comes to gender in society, in most places in the world, we have only two distinct genders which have quite strict rules put on both of them. This is our tradition. And the individuals in the world who are seen to break this tradition are met with fear, hate, misunderstanding, or censorship. That is; gender nonconforming individuals tend to be discriminated against—whether they are people who are gender nonconforming through their looks, or by having a non-heterosexual orientation. So the item to consider here is our tradition of a gender binary that has strict guidelines for how to be a 『man』 and 『woman.』 In this way, subverting the gender binary or at least giving it an update is actually quite crucial to gaining an absolute world peace and equality.

What drag essentially does is play with the concept of binary gender. By playing with it—usually exaggerating it—it’s also subverting it and can work to draw the audience’s attention to the fact that in actuality the way humans have fabricated gender is extremely bizarre, and its rules are quite arbitrarily made. It can lead to people to question how we define 『man』 and 『woman.』

I don’t think the concepts of man and woman should be obliterated, but I would like to have new options and in-between states become more accepted. Drag works to show that gender is a farce. It highlights the fact that gender and biological sex are distinct. Gender is something humans do that is a socially created phenomenon. Which means that we can change it and it can evolve—so that more people with diverse gender expressions and interests can be better included in society.

I believe that drag does work to popularize unconventional gender expression, and I believe that making currently unconventional gender expression more mainstream will definitely contribute to having a more inclusive society in terms of gender and therefore sexual orientation.

On another note, because the art of drag itself champions creativity, freedom, and over-the-top-ness, it leads it to be an inherently inclusive space. Drag celebrates a spirit of hyper-exaggeration. Nothing is too big or lavish or crazy or wacky for drag. In fact, it’s encouraged to be too shocking, too sexual, too colorful, too big, too sparkly, etc. This is because the core purpose of drag is to be ostentatiously transgressive to society. Therefore, there is no way to transgress within the alternate dimension of drag. You can’t break the rules when the name of the game is to break the rules—and be powerful or sexy or funny while you do it. Nothing you could possibly do would be 『too much』 or 『too weird』 in any way for drag. You will never be censored, so in this realm of ultimate freedom, you will find a lot of acceptance and inclusion.
另外,由於變裝藝術自身擁護創意、自由,這最重要的意義是使變裝成為了一種本質上包容的空間。變裝讚頌的是一種「超級誇大」的精神。對變裝來說沒有什麼是太大或太華麗或太瘋狂或太古怪的。事實上,做得太震驚、太性意味、太色彩斑斕、太大、太閃亮是受鼓勵的。因為便裝的核心目的就是面對社會、大張聲勢地打破界限。
因此,局限在變裝的轉換維度是不能打破什麼界限的。當遊戲本身就是打破規則時,你反倒沒法打破它的規則——而通過做得有力量或性感或滑稽,你卻能打破規則。在變裝的任何方面,你可能做到的一切都不會「太過了」或「太奇怪了」。你永遠不會被質疑,因此在這個終極自由的國度,你會尋找到更多接納和包容。
