Designed in the shape of a Zun, a traditional Chinese bronze ware, the container is 38.44 cm high and 22.89 cm wide. The size refers to the average distance between the Earth and the moon of 384,400 km and the 22.89-day-long lunar probe task, respectively.
容器造型借鑑自我國傳統的青銅「尊」造型。高38.44釐米，象徵地球與月亮平均間距384400公裡；寬22.89釐米，象徵嫦娥五號自發射到返回的任務時長22.89天。
2020年11月24日，嫦娥五號發射成功，12月17日凌晨，完成「挖土」之旅返回地球，帶回約1731克月球樣品。
月球樣品，主要為月壤，即覆蓋在月球表面的「土壤」（soil on the lunar surface），包含微細的礦物顆粒（mineral particles）、巖石碎屑（rock fragments）和玻璃質微粒（glassy particles）等。月壤顆粒質地微細，主要由氧(oxygen)、矽(silicon)、鋁( aluminum)、鐵(iron)、鎂(magnesium)、鈣(calcium)、鈉(natrium)、鉀(kalium)、鈦(titanium)等元素構成，不含任何有機養分（organic nutrients），而且非常乾燥。
1月18日，國家航天局首次對外發布了《月球樣品管理辦法》。
The lunar samples will be divided into four categories－permanent storage, backup permanent storage, research, and public-interest purposes, according to the regulations.
辦法規定，月球樣品原則上將分為永久存儲、備份永久存儲、研究和公益四種基礎用途。
按照基礎用途：永久存儲和備份永久存儲樣品作為原始樣品進行封存（sealed and stored as original samples）；研究樣品用於月球科學研究、分析（scientific research and analysis）；公益樣品用於展覽（public exhibition）、科普、教育（science education）等公益性活動。
