~Introducing food culture from around the world~
Ranch dressing 田園醬 tián yuán jiàng is a type of salad dressing made of some combination of buttermilk, salt, garlic, onion, mustard, herbs (most commonly chives, parsley, and dill), and spices (predominantly black pepper, paprika, and ground mustard seed), mixed into a sauce based on mayonnaise or other oil emulsions.
Sour cream and yogurt are sometimes used as a substitute by some cooks to create a lower-fat version.
Ranch dressing has been the best-selling salad dressing in the United States since 1992, when it overtook Italian dressing.
It's common in the United States as a dipping sauce for broccoli, carrots, and celery, as well as a dip for chips and "bar foods" such as french fries and chicken wings.
Also, a very popular dipping sauce for other fried foods such as fried mushrooms, fried zucchini, fried pickles, jalapeno poppers, onion rings, chicken fingers, and hushpuppies. In addition, ranch dressing can be used on every other food known to man.
Hamburger? Put ranch on it. Pizza? Literally made for ranch. Doner dürüm? Sure, put ranch on that. Corn dogs? Heck, why not?... put ranch on those, too. The world is your playground.
Disgusting? Not at all, it's the way God intended
While popular in the United States and Canada, ranch dressing is virtually unknown in other parts of the world. Maybe a small fan club in Australia and the UK. We are writing this to change that. The whole world needs to know!
But sadly, I can not explain with mere words how much Americans love their ranch... so here's a handy GIF:
Note: don't try this at home
A little sauce history: In the early 1950s, a guy named Steve Henson developed what is now known as ranch dressing while working as a plumbing contractor for three years in the remote Alaskan bush.
In 1954, he and his wife Gayle opened Hidden Valley Ranch, a dude ranch at the former Sweetwater Ranch on San Marcos Pass in Santa Barbara County, California, where they served it to customers.
It became massively popular, and they began selling it in packages for customers to take home, both as a finished product and as packets of seasoning to be mixed with mayonnaise and buttermilk.
As demand grew, they incorporated Hidden Valley Ranch Food Products, Inc., and opened a factory to manufacture it in larger volumes, which they first distributed to supermarkets in the Southwest, and eventually, nationwide. In October 1972, the Hidden Valley Ranch brand was bought by Clorox for $8 million.
Both Kraft Foods and General Foods have tried copying the sauce by creating similar knock-off products and were thusly sued into oblivion. Still today, though, you might find "ranch style" things laying around.
For USA peeps living in China, this creates a problem. How to find ranch in this country? It's hard and/or expensive. Thankfully, Hidden Valley sells little ranch powder packets where you just need to add mayo and milk.
