Nowadays, you can see a giant tower standing somewhere outside in Beijing. Looking like a cross between spaceship and a traditional Chinese pagoda, it is the Smog Free Tower, namely, it is a giant air purifier which is created by the Netherlandish designer Daan Roosegaarde and his team.
As said, Roosegaarde conceived the idea from his experience in Beijing in 2013. "I distinctively remember looking out of my hotel window one day and simply not being able to see anything," he said. "From one day to the next, the city had disappeared under a thick blanket of smog."
Certainly, China contributed to the existence of the Smog Free Tower. It took over two and a half years to develop. It was first unveiled last year in Rotterdam where Roosegaarde's design studio is based. It is a seven-meter tall structure that combines beautiful design and technological advancement.
It is designed to create clean air in its vicinity, offering a respite from hazardous levels of pollution. According to the designer, it processes 30,000 cubic meters of air per hour–removing ultra-fine smog particles and pumping out clean air using no more electricity than a water boiler.
Here’s how it works: using ion technology, the tower attracts and sucks in small pollution particles by sending positive ions into the air. Once inside the tower, these particles attach themselves to a grounded, negatively charged surface--what's called a counter electrode.
Moreover, the process improves surrounding air quality by 75 percent and doesn’t produce ozone. The tower runs on no more than 1,400 watts. Surprisingly, Roosegaarde and his team have also figured out how to compress the captured particles into tiny "gemstones" that are then sealed in a resin cube and mounted onto rings and cufflinks.
This time, China’s Ministry of Environmental Protection has greatly supported the subject. Moreover, Roosegaarde is asked to take the project across China. Hoping that the support comes amid the government's reinforced efforts to tackle air pollution.
However, air pollution is an issue that can't be fixed overnight, nor with just one tower. We need a bottom-up effort, with both citizens and governments actively working for change. Dear fellows, please contribute your efforts to clear air!
