1. The good news is that a once-divided Europe has begun to narrow its differences over Libya, and that, now that Mr. Haftar no longer looks a winner, America seems to have cooled on him.
好消息是，一度分裂的歐洲已經開始縮小在利比亞問題上的分歧，而現在哈夫塔似乎不再是贏家，美國似乎對他冷淡了。

1. narrow 作形容詞講時表示：
①「狹窄的」，即measuring only a small distance from one side to the other, especially in relation to the length
narrow street/road/path
除了表示空間上的狹窄，也可以引申為「差一點兒，幾乎」
narrow escape 九死一生
narrow victory/defeat 險勝/敗
narrow majority/margin 微弱多數/輕微優勢
eg. More recently, a narrower majority has emerged for outlawing abortion after 20 weeks, with some exceptions.
近來，微弱多數人認為20周以後墮胎違法，特殊情況除外。
②表示思維、想法狹隘，即a narrow attitude or way of looking at a situation is too limited and does not consider enough possibilities，反義詞為broad
narrow-minded心胸狹隘的
narrow sense/definition 狹義
③表示有限的，即limited in range or number of things
eg. The company offered only a narrow range of financial services.
該公司僅提供為數不多的金融服務。
此外，narrow也可用為動詞，表示「使變狹窄；縮小」
eg. He narrowed his eyes and gazed at the horizon.
他眯起眼凝視著地平線。
narrow/close the gap 縮小差距
narrow down 縮小，減少
eg. Graduates can select several categories and narrow down their options.
畢業生可以選擇幾個類別, 縮小自己的選擇範圍。
2. look a winner 這裡look為連繫動詞，表示「看起來，像是…」
eg. You're sure I won't be made to look a fool?
你確定這麼做不會讓我難堪嗎？
look還可以表示「面向，面朝」
eg. The garden looks south.
花園朝南。
再補充一些關於look的習語：
look daggers at sb. 怒目而視
look sb. up and down 上下打量
look down your nose at sb./sth. 瞧不起
詞類辨析look, glance, peek/peep, glare, stare,gaze, gape
look 是最通用的詞，其意義是：將視線集中於某物。
glance指匆匆地或粗略地一看，側重心不在焉地、匆忙地看一眼。
peek/peer 指不經意的看，偷看，瞥一眼。
glare指用憤恨、兇狠或含敵意的眼光死死看著某人。
stare側重因驚奇、好奇、粗魯無禮等而睜大眼睛看。
gaze指出於羨慕、感興趣、關心或驚異而長時間目不轉睛地看。
gape 指因震驚或驚訝而長久地看，目瞪口呆。
3. lean 作動詞講時，表示「傾斜；靠著」
lean forward 向前傾
lean back 向後仰，往後靠
lean over 傾身，彎下身子
lean against/on 靠著
此外lean on 還表示「依靠，依賴」
eg. We're supposed to lean on each other.
我們應該相互依靠。
lean 也可作形容詞，表示「瘦的，貧乏的」
a lean year歉收年
eg. With judicious economy, he told his brother, I shall hope to makethat carry me through the lean years.
憑藉著精打細算，他告訴自己的兄弟，我指望這筆錢能讓我度過艱苦的歲月。
4. fuel 作名詞時表示「燃料」
eg. Coal is one of the cheapest fuels.
煤是最便宜的燃料之一。
add fuel to the fire/flames 火上澆油
表示「用燃料」: run on fuel
表示「燃料用完了」：run out of fuel
表示「燃料快用完了」：sth. is running low onfuel
擴充幾種燃料的表達方式：
fossil fuel 化石燃料
nuclear fuel 原子核燃料
solid fuel 固體燃料
domestic/household fuel 家用燃料
smokeless fuel 無煙燃料
unleaded fuel 無鉛燃料
biofuel 生物燃料
此外fuel也可以用作動詞，除了表示「加燃料」之外，也可表示「激化，煽動」，即to make sth., especially sth. bad, increase or become stronger，近義詞為provoke
fuel speculation/rumors/controversy
eg. Progress was slow, fueling concerns that the stadium would not be finished on time.
緩慢的進度令人們愈發擔憂體育館不能如期建成。
The resignation left Lebanon in shock and fueled speculation that hehad been forced to resign by the Saudi royal family.
這一辭職聲明使黎巴嫩陷入震驚之中，同時引發了是沙特王室迫使他辭職的猜測。
