腰椎共有5個椎體，其下方是骶椎。每個椎體間都有椎間盤。第1腰椎與第2腰椎之間的椎間盤稱為腰1/2椎間盤，以此類推，第5腰椎與骶椎之間的椎間盤就稱為腰5/骶1椎間盤。椎間盤是椎體與椎體之間的軟墊，可以緩衝震蕩，保護脊柱不受傷害。隨著年齡的老化，椎間盤組織不斷發生勞損與撕裂，最終強度下降，纖維環破裂，椎間盤組織向外突出，如果引起神經壓迫，可產生相應神經支配區域的感覺、運動異常，稱為椎間盤突出症。

A spinal disc consists of two main parts: the jelly-like nucleus pulposus in the disc's center and the outer-most layers, collectively called the annulus fibrosus. These two components facilitate the spine's movement and provide support for the vertebrae.
椎間盤主要包括兩部分：椎間盤中央的膠凍狀的髓核，外部有許多層合起來稱為纖維環。這兩個組成部份使脊柱便於活動，並為椎體提供支撐。
Disc degeneration or trauma can cause the nucleus to herniate through the weakened layers of the outer disc and leak out of the annulus fibrosus into the spinal canal.
椎間盤退變或創傷會引起髓核從薄弱的椎間盤外層疝出，漏到纖維環之外進入椎管。
In the case of a lumbar herniated disc, the weak spot in the annulus fibrosus is directly underneath the spinal nerve root, so a herniation in this area can put direct pressure on the nerve.
在腰椎間盤突出病例，纖維環的薄弱處正好在脊神經根深面，所以這個部位的椎間盤突出會直接壓迫神經。
The nerve root extends down the leg, and any type of pinching or pressure on the nerve in the lower spine can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness to radiate along the path of the nerve down the leg. However, many people have shown a herniated disc on MRI scans yet have no associated pain, so not all herniated discs will cause symptoms.
神經根向下延伸到腿部，任何腰椎神經的擠壓刺激都會引起沿神經走行途徑向下放射到腿部的疼痛、麻木、針刺感和乏力。然而，許多人在磁共振掃描上顯示有椎間盤突出，卻沒有相應的疼痛。因此並非所有的椎間盤突出都會引起症狀。
