1. to fly off the handle 發脾氣，發火

斧頭既大，又重，頭上還有鋒利的刀口。這是一個很危險的工具，特別是當斧頭突然從斧柄上脫落的時候，誰要是倒黴正好在旁邊的話，就有可能被砍傷。現在，美國人就把有的人突然失去控制而勃然大怒的現象叫作：To fly off the handle。Fly是飛的意思，而handle是指斧頭柄。我們來舉個例子看看，to fly off the handle在日常生活中是怎麼用的。

例句-1: My wife spent all afternoon yesterday cooking a special dinner for our wedding anniversary. So she really flew off the handle when I came home three hours late.

那些開發西部的拓荒者經常拿打獵獲得的小動物作為他們的肉食，有時還利用它們的皮毛。他們還訓練狗在打獵的時候學會把打中的動物叼回來。可是，動物為了逃命，往往會爬到樹上去。那些狗有時一糊塗沒看清楚動物上了哪棵樹，結果對著一棵沒有動物的樹亂叫。這在英文裡就是：To bark up the wrong tree。To bark 就是狗叫，wrong是錯的意思，tree就是樹。To bark up the wrong tree翻成中文可以說是：找錯門了。
