《I Dreamed a Dream》（我曾有夢）是根據法國作家雨果的小說《悲慘世界》(Les Misérables)改編同名歌劇的主題曲。其中，這首歌的曲子由法國作曲家Claude-Michel Schönberg創作，英文歌詞由出生於南非的記者兼詞作者Herbert Kretzmer完成。
在歌劇中，這首歌由女主角芳汀演唱，講述了其悲劇的前半生。年輕美貌的芳汀愛上了貴族青年，並幻想著自己將擁有美好的愛情與未來。誰知所託非人，被貴族青年殘酷拋棄。在她有私生女的事情被告發後，不幸被趕出工廠，流落街頭，成為妓女。就在這個時候，芳汀唱起了歌曲《I Dreamed a Dream》。
了解了這一故事背景，我們就能清晰地把握歌曲的脈絡。歌曲中芳汀帶著甜蜜回憶了青春時的榮華與驕縱，而在被男友拋棄後她的生活瞬間跌至地獄。雖然她此時對未來仍抱有幻想，但是微弱的希望之光卻很快被絕望吞噬。歌曲既是對芳汀悲劇生活的哀悼，也是對法國大革命時期黑暗、殘酷社會現實的控訴。
