不過，這句習語也有可能是源於贖金。在Randle Cotgrave1611年的《A Dictionary of the French and English Languages》中，我們可以得知，當軍隊一方失敗的時候，為了贖回被抓住的士兵，可以用quarter來表示贖金：
Quartier - quarter, or faire war, wherein souldiers are taken prisoners and ransomed at a certaine rate.
