For the lonely souls who want a furry friend but can't, the solution is easy. Go and visit a cat or dog café to get your furry fix. During the summer we reviewed 18  of the coolest cat and dog cafes. We made sure the pets were happy, friendly and obviously we checked that if the food was good.

Why are cat or dog cafes so popular?

According to the 2018 China Pet Industry Whitepaper, there are 91.49 million cats or dogs in the country, meaning the average pet owner has 1.5 dogs and 1.8 cats per person.

 「Owning a cat and dog at a young age」 has become something many teens and young adults strive to achieve, and they can improve your happiness, wellbeing and ultimately your success.

Dog and Cat Cafes are a grest way to get a good meal, a cup of coffee or two and enjoy the company of furry animals throughout the afternoon.

Le Chaton Coffee House

Many who have been here will know that the cats here are insanely adorable. They will approach customers even without snacks and treats.

Many also visit the cafe for their delicious cream puffs. While it's only been 3 months since its opening, this café has attracted many customers.

The cats will roll on their bellies without petting them, and they feel very furry in your arms. And if you're a bit of a clean-freak don't worry, there is no odor and almost no cat fur in this place. 

It also has a warm vintage ambience. 

The desserts here are delicious - the rich chocolate is silky smooth, and the cheesecake is sweet but not too sickly sweet, pairing well with their coffee.

Tao Mao Mao. Cat Petting Cafe

For those who want to cuddle cats, we would recommend you to come here, as they have over 30. Those who are lucky enough might be able to see these cats dining together.

The handsome owner, Tony, is always around as he monitors the in-store operations. 

There is a good group of Maine Coon cats here, and they are all very docile.

The desserts and beverages here are as tasteful as the kitties. Their drinks have a slight alcoholic flavor to them and a cute design. 

Finish your food and play with the cats for a good afternoon.

For a Bigger Picture Cat Exhibition

There are over 20 different types of cats here!

All of the cats here love attention, and if you take out a treat, they will start running towards you.

There is a rose pattern leopard cat called Siewmai, which is incredibly playful.

The cafe spans 2 floors, and there are gaming tables and massage chairs here for you to relax in. The desserts, especially the confection tiramisu, is silky and has a lovely rich chocolate aroma.

CherryPepsi

There are over 10 hairless cats here, and while they may seam fearsome they are super gentle as well.

The cats here have to often wear sunblock to prevent any sunburns and flu.

There are different types of cats and dogs on the first and third floor. Though they are all slightly temperamental, they can be baited with snacks. 

This café looks like a small bar from the outside, but it has everything you need.

Nekotoki

This is a refreshing cat haven for cat lovers!

The wood decor compliments the floor length windows and provides great views from the 25th floor. The blue folded ear cats; Jessica and Zui, love chasing the other cats around.

The cats want everything, and will use their meaty paws to beg for treats.

The desserts aren't too great as the caramelized cakes are slightly buttery and heavy, with an icy texture. 

It might be good to leave it out for a while before eating.

Compared to other cat cafes, there isn't a lot of cats here. We recommend you go on a weekday to ensure you get playtime with the cats.

Aman's House Cat

The cafe goes for an oriental teahouse theme. There are lesser cats here as compared to other places.

There are 3 cats that stay here on a regular basis. The entire place is pretty clean and without many people.

The oldest cat is about 4 years old and often enjoys lying on the tatami mat in a daze.

There are different ceramic decors at this venue, all brought in by the owner from Jingde town. Enjoy a pot of tea and spend the whole afternoon here.

Cat Holiday. Cat Petting Cafe

This cat cafe is quite easy to miss if you don't keep a close lookout when walking by.

With tatami mats around, the place is filled with cats of different breeds like the ragged doll cat, chinchilla, American shorthair, Maine, leopard cat, sphinx cat etc.

The fat and lazy Russian Blue cat, Mao Bi, is a mute cat which doesn't look really smart, but it actually is.

If you pull out the dried fish, you'll see the furry creatures coming to you for a bite. Do note -they'll run away again after eating it.

The cakes are pretty good as they are soft and moist, with the right amount of sweetness. The drinks are also slightly sweet, great for those with a sweet tooth.

There are many cat cafes on Da Due Lu and Catier is one of them. Catier has remained popular since early last year.

The cat Tang Yuan is a clumsy and often falls every few steps, but it does have a fierce personality

The store spans 3 floors and has a gaming table, switch table and comics to entertain guests through the day.

Ignorant Cat, Cat Teahouse

There are 4-5 Garfield cats greeting customers when they first enter.

We thought that the cats only look chubby, but they actually are really chubby and meaty.

The cakes and desserts are super cute, and are decorated to look like cats.

Fruit Cat

This is an uncommon ragged-doll cat cafe. The venue is located on the 14th floor of a commercial building, and there are 6 ragged doll cats.

The cats are really docile, even if you stepped on their tails they wouldn't scratch you.

Order a cup of sweet mocha and play with the cats here for a therapeutic weekend treat.

Miaoling Ge Cat Innovative and Experiential Hall

Previously located on Nanjing Xi Lu, the cafe is now on Jinsha Jiang Lu and is still pink and pastel themed.

There are over 20 cats here and they will all approach you if you bring out treats.

Candy, a cute cat, will start rolling around even before you feed him and is incredibly attached to customers.

Opened at Joy City on B1, the environment is not really great (probably due to the poor air conditioning), but there are a lot of different types of cats here.

The playful cats are hidden in the glass windows and they aren't really friendly.

Nonetheless, the desserts like the unicorn dessert, which is beautiful and dreamy, and filled with dragon fruit flavors, make for a great summer treat.

DOG CAFES

Chaifu.Dou Chai Cafe and Experiential Hall

The 300㎡ dog haven has delicious desserts and is a great spot for a therapeutic weekend.

There are 14 expensive pure bred dogs here, each worth about 3W and above.

There is an impatient Chuan Pu, but it's very good looking. Many people queue for a photo with him.

Xiao Pi, which means playful in Chinese, is so playful and looks crazy when he runs.

Customers can even feed the dogs here themselves, and it's a lovely feeling to be surrounded by these furry friends.

Winter is coming

If you're tired of cuddling small dogs, how about large ones?

This is a rare Afghan Hound themed café, and there are a total of 19 large dogs here.

The owner's favorite Winter dog has the same name as the cafe, and is very handsome.

Demo is a Saluki dog and often likes to go to the first door for a quick run.

When the team starts feeding the dogs you can see them get really rowdy and hungry for food.

If you're tired after playing with the dogs, take a break in the rest area and have some of their desserts, like the Oreo shaved ice or black mountain shaved ice.

Puppy Cubby Café

If you're looking for a new popular dog cafe, it will definitely be Puppy Cubby Cafe.

There are Xi Shi, Teddy, Pomeranian, French Bulldog, and Corgis here. Each one of the dogs here are no taller than your knees.

You can even lie on the beds and cuddle the dogs.

The French Bulldog loves lying at the customer's feet.

The desserts are all beautifully designed and include strawberry parfait, waffle stick, mad chocolate and more.

Hello Corgi

Another gem on Da Xue Lu is this cute corgis cafe.

There are 8 short legged corgis who will absolutely capture your heart.

Er Lang Shen is the most playful here and will chase other dogs and people around.

The chubby Prada loves rolling and lazing around the cafe.

The afternoon tea is also Corgi themed and is pretty good too.

Hoo Dog Cafe

As there are not many dog cafes in Pudong, it's great that Hoodogcafe opened in Biyun Lu.

There are over 10 small and big dogs here. 

This puppy is the 3 year old Ba Ge, and while it looks honest and slightly pitiful, it's actually a strong leader.

The golden retriever, Katrina, is the big Brother amongst the dogs. And while it has a fierce look, it's actually very gentle to customers.

Bei Di Li is a foodie at heart, and if you're not careful, he will eat your cake from the table.

While we didn't have much expectations going in, we were pleasantly surprised with the soft and smooth latte and the yummy slice of blueberry cheesecake they offered us.

Lucky & Joy

Unlike other dog cafes, this cafe is more of a pet-lover restaurant with great dog food. Many customers bring their own dogs here to have a playdate or celebrate their dog's birthday.
