The psychology behind 『revenge bedtime procrastination』
procrastinate /prə(ʊ)'kræstɪneɪt/ 不及物動詞,表示:耽擱,拖延(to delay doing something that you ought to do, usually because you do not want to do it)
同義詞:put off
People often procrastinate when it comes to paperwork.
Emma Rao spent almost three years on China’s notorious 『996 schedule』: working from nine in the morning to nine in the evening, six days a week. 「I was deprived of all my personal life,」 says she.
notorious /nə(ʊ)'tɔːrɪəs/ 表示:臭名昭著的,聲名狼藉的(famous or well-known for something bad)
Just like the notorious durian fruit, this snail-based rice noodle soup dish has created a buzz on Chinese social media thanks to its infamous smell.
deprive /dɪ'praɪv/ deprive sb of sth 表示:剝奪(to prevent someone from having something, especially something that they need or should have)
A lot of these children have been deprived of a normal home life.
【例如】to deprive someone of his rights剝奪某人的權利,不能照中文的搭配說成*to deprive someone's rights。
Mr. Biden has said the holdup of the transition threatened national security by depriving his team of critical briefings.
Rao was doing what the Chinese have called 『bàofùxìng áoyè』 – or 『revenge bedtime procrastination』. The phrase spread rapidly on Twitter in June after a post by journalist Daphne K Lee. She described the phenomenon as when 「people who don’t have much control over their daytime life refuse to sleep early in order to regain some sense of freedom during late-night hours」.
Emma Rao
regain /rɪˈɡeɪn/ 及物動詞,表示「重新獲得,復得,恢復(to get something back, especially an ability or quality, that you have lost)」
同義詞:recover
He somehow managed to regain his balance .
Government forces have regained control of the city.
Twitter quickly removed many of the messages, but in some cases similar tweets were sent again from the same accounts, suggesting that Twitter was powerless to regain control.
The phrase might have been popularised in China, but the phenomenon it describes is likely widespread, with over-stretched workers all over the world putting off bedtime to claim some precious personal time – even though they know it’s not good for them.
precious seconds / minutes / hours / time
We cannot afford to waste precious time.
Experts have long warned that insufficient sleep is an unheeded global public-health epidemic. A 2019 survey showed that 62% of adults worldwide feel they don’t get enough sleep. People cited various reasons for this shortfall, including stress and their sleeping environment, but 37% blamed their hectic work or school schedule. Long hours at the office aside, another part of the problem is that modern working patterns mean people find it harder to draw boundaries between work and home. Emails and instant messaging mean employers can always be in touch.
unheeded /ʌn'hiːdɪd/ 表示:被忽視的(noticed but not listened to, accepted, or believed)
