What Happened to FanBingbing, China’s Most Famous Actress?
BEIJING — Fan Bingbing is arguably the most famous actress in China, a prolific star who has made the leap to international fame with roles in the 「Iron Man」 and 「X-Men」 franchises. She appeared in Cannes in May to promote a coming spy blockbuster with Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz and Lupita Nyong』o.
arguably 一般用於形容詞比較級或最高級前,表示「可以說,可論證地」(used when giving your opinion to say that there are good reasons why something might be true)
prolific [prəˈlɪfɪk] adj. a prolific artist, writer etc poduces many works of art, books etc多產的,作品豐富的 這個詞一般用於形容作家、演員、畫家,a prolific star是說範冰冰是一個多產的明星。
make the leap to international fame leap本義是跳躍,make the leap to international fame可理解為「一躍成為國際明星」
Second, going 「viral」 overnight is a myth. Hits rely on a series of closely connected events: a celebrity picking up a tweet and sharing it with countless followers, for example.
2.rise to fame 一舉成名 ◇Mendoza rose to fame swiftly after a boxing match when he was only fourteen years old.
3.shoot to fame/stardom ◇In 1929 she shot to stardom on Broadway in a Noel Coward play.1929
the 「Iron Man」 and 「X-Men」 franchises《鋼鐵俠》和《X戰警》系列
She has more than 62 million followers on China’s equivalent of Twitter, Weibo, and appears in ads for products around the world — from vitamins in Australia to lipstick by Guerlain, the watches of Montblanc and the diamonds of De Beers.
sb has … followers 某人有…
She has more than 62 million followers on Weibo,而是說 She has more than 62 million followers on China’s equivalent of Twitter, Weibo,這是因為作者考慮到《紐約時報》面對的讀者大部分是以英語為母語的人,他們可能對新浪微博並沒有什麼概念,所以將其與Twitter聯繫起來,讀者就能立刻明白了。
But Xiaomi, an innovative electronics firm once seen as China's answer to Apple, is losing steam.
2.a local version of sth/ the Chinese version of sth Yet Ms Jin, who is 49, is the country’s most popular television judge. Shebegan with a local version of 「So You Think You Can Dance」 and hit the jackpot with 「The Jin Xing Show」, a variety and chat programme with an audience of around 100m. She has appeared with her husband on the Chinese version of 「The Amazing Race」, in which couples race each other around the world.
Now she is missing.
Ms. Fan, who turns 37 on Sunday, has dropped out of public view for more than three months — the victim of a sudden and precipitous fall from grace.
drop out of public view
fall from grace / favour If someone falls from grace, they suddenly stop being successful or popular. 突然失利;過氣;受冷落 ◇He fell from grace for the first time when he was convicted of drink-driving.
Her disappearance has been greeted with concern among fans and fear among her counterparts in the industry. It has fueled a flurry of rumors of personal rivalries and political intrigue, even at the pinnacles of power in Beijing, though few concrete facts.
be greeted with concern among sb 引起了…
be greeted with/by sth to react to sb / sth in a particular way(以某種方式)對…作出反應 ◇The changes were greeted with suspicion. ◇The team's win was greeted as a major triumph.
fuel a flurry of rumors of sth
a flurry of sth 一陣…( A flurry of something such as activity or excitement is a short intense period of it.) 一般跟某種心情或某個活動,比如◇The day started with a flurry of activity . ◇Her arrival caused a flurry of excitement.
pinnacle 既可以指實際意義上的「山峰,尖頂」,也可以指抽象意義上的「巔峰,鼎盛時期」,比如◇She is at the pinnacle of her profession. at the pinnacles of power
That so little is known about someone so famous in China — even whether she is in detention, or in hiding — says much about the murky intersection of politics and business, entertainment and celebrity.
「She’s like collateral damage,」Hung Huang, a critic and publisher, said.
be in detention 被扣押,被監禁
be in hiding 躲起來 (If someone is in hiding, they have secretly gone somewhere where they cannot be seen or found.)
murky [ˈmɜːki] adj.not clearly known and suspected of not being honest隱晦的;含糊的;曖昧可疑的 ◇He had a somewhat murky past.
collateral damage 本是軍事用語,指軍事行動造成的平民傷亡或非軍事設施的破壞(when non-military people are hurt or killed, or non-military property is damaged, as a result of actions in a war – used especially by the army, navy etc) 可理解為「無辜的人,犧牲品」。
