Working Britons have less time for leisure than other Europeans. Covid-19 is changing that
union 工會，機構中代表和保障員工利益的組織。
slack作為名詞，在這個語境表示閒置；union slack工會閒散；即本來工會要做很多維護員工的工作，因為疫情到來，不需要做太多工作，顯得有些閒散。形容英國人工作狀態的變化。
Briton英國人；leisure 名詞，空閒；leisure activities/interests/pursuits業餘活動。at leisure閒散，talk at leisure閒談；at one's leisure有空時，空閒時，read the article at your leisure，有空時看看文章。
European這裡是名詞，歐洲人。
副標題意思是，從前英國的工作者相對其它歐洲國家工作者閒暇時間少。現在疫情改變了這一狀況。
For 23 years, Richard Ramsey’s working life had the same essential rhythm, one that will be familiar to office workers everywhere. The hours changed, the pay changed, sometimes the job changed. But he always got into a car in the morning, spent 30-40 minutes crawling the four miles into the office, in central Belfast, and came back the same way each evening, ready to sleep and repeat. His colleagues at Ulster Bank had started to work more flexibly in recent years. But, as its chief economist, he assumed that the office was the only place he could work: he needed to be close to his beloved Bloomberg terminal.
本段分別描述兩個英國人過去的工作日常。一位是雷打不動的工作節奏；一位是相對靈活的工作節奏，但是因為是首席經濟學家，所以只喜歡呆在距離彭博社很近的辦公室工作。
working life工作生活
essential基本的，essential rhythm基本節奏；essential還表示極其重要的，完全必要的；相當於vital；be essential for/to sth/to do sth（做）某事極為重要、必要。
be familiar to sb某物對某人而言熟悉；sb is familiar with sth某人對某物熟悉。
pay工資，薪水；a pay increase/rise加薪；make a pay claim正式要求加薪。
crawl動詞，本意是爬行，匍匐前行；這裡表示move forward very slowly，緩慢前行。文中的語境是形容上班路上堵車，作者的描述幽默。crawl to sb巴結某人，卑躬屈膝，比如she is always crawling to the boss.她對老闆總是諂媚奉承。

assume（沒有證據地）認為，假定；it is reasonable to assume that認為...是有道理的。
beloved喜愛的；beloved by/of sb某人鍾愛的，非常喜愛的；the doll beloved by/of girls女孩們鍾愛的洋娃娃。beloved 僅用於名詞前修飾，表示深愛的，親愛的；beloved son愛子。
chief economist首席經濟學家；我們此前說的Editor-in-chief是雜誌或報刊主編；chief executive officer (CEO)執行長。

It turns out he was wrong. In March, when covid-19 began to spread rapidly in Britain, everyone at the bank’s headquarters, like millions of other British office workers, was ordered home. Mr Ramsey experienced 「teething problems」 for a week, but he soon replicated his office set-up. When the office reopens, he will mostly stay at home, perhaps going in once or twice a week for meetings. He misses the camaraderie of the office, but that is outweighed by the time he saves on commuting and the flexibility to walk the dog at lunchtime. 「It’s not going to go back to the way it was,」 he says.
本段繼續講第二位英國人的工作節奏，疫情一來，發生了很多變化。領導讓在家辦公，剛開始不太適應，後來習慣了。在家辦公有利有弊，不過他認為過去的工作節奏一去不復返。
spread動詞，這裡形容疫情傳播
headquarters總部，注意這個詞本身就用作複數形式，對應的動詞可以是單數，也可以是複數：the firm's headquaters is/are in London.公司總部在倫敦; Headquaters in Dublin has/have agreed. 柏林總部表示同意。
be odered home規定在家辦公，這個表述直接而達意。
teething problem/troubles：problems in the early stages of something某個事初期的問題。teethe動詞本意表示幼兒出牙，長牙，這裡去掉e加ing成為形容詞，teething本意也是長牙的。teething problem是一個俗語，不是長牙問題，而是初期的典型問題。
replicate動詞，複製，近義詞duplicate。the virus replicates itself.病毒自我複製。
set-up設置，近義詞configuration。
camaraderie 同事情誼，友誼；用來形容職場的好關係非常合適。
outweigh超過，大於，be more important than，本身含有比較級的意思，比如the advantages far outweigh the disadvantages利遠大於弊。
commuting通勤；比如第一段的spend 30-40 mininutes crawling the four miles into the office就是形容早高峰通勤的擁堵。
walk the dog遛狗。
