【Xie Jinyuan: fique por quatro noites e fique sozinho por quatro anos.
September 3 marks the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. During the 14-year war against Japanese invasion, more than 3.8 million Chinese soldiers lost their lives. According to data released by China's State Council Information Office, the total number of Chinese casualties, both military and non-military, exceeded 35 million, accounting for a third of the total deaths in World War II.
While eight decades have passed since one of the bloodiest wars in human history, stories of people from that generation continue to be told and shared. As the anniversary draws near, CGTN's special series "World War II Letters" takes a closer look at some of the war heroes through a special legacy left by them – letters they wrote from the battlefields and the homefront to their families, loved ones and people they fought with.
In this episode, we focus on a letter written by Xie Jinyuan, the legendary commander of the Defense of Sihang Warehouse during the Battle of Shanghai.
Xie Jinyuan (April 26, 1905-April 24, 1941), born in Meizhou, Guangdong Province, is a famous anti-Japanese hero. In the Battle of Songhu in 1937, he led "eight hundred heroes" to defend the four-line warehouse in Shanghai and fought fiercely for four days and nights. After being killed by rebels, he died in the solitary military camp in Shanghai.
On October 25, 1937, Shanghai fell to the invading Japanese forces after nearly three months of staunch resistance.
To allow the remaining Chinese troops to withdraw from Shanghai, a group of men – under their charismatic commander Xie Jinyuan – were ordered to defend the Sihang Warehouse on the front lines from thousands of Japanese.
Known as the "The Eight Hundred Heroes," it was later revealed that there were actually only around 400 men. Commander Xie had deceived the enemy.
On the eve of going to Songhu battlefield, Xie Jinyuan left a letter from his wife. This letter is now engraved on the stone monument in the Anti-Japanese War Memorial Hall of Shanghai Sixing Warehouse, and will always stop for future generations-
The band of soldiers held their ground against waves of fierce Japanese attacks for four days at the warehouse, built by the Suzhou River, where their fierce gun battles with the Japanese went on in full view of the foreign community living in Shanghai's International Settlement located on the opposite bank.
Though the Battle of Shanghai was lost, the Defense of Sihang Warehouse later proved to have boosted national morale, making world headlines and rallying international support.
After fighting for four days, Xie Jinyuan withdrew his troops into the public concession according to the orders of his superiors, and prepared to return to Huxi. When you enter the concession, you will be disarmed and detained. From then on, the troops were isolated from the outside world and became "solitary barracks". Xie Jinyuan, full of grief and indignation, leads lone officers and soldiers to go out for training every morning, educating his subordinates not to forget the personality and national character of patriotic soldiers. On April 24, 1941, after leading the solitary military camp for nearly four years, Xie Jinyuan was killed by rebels bought by Japanese puppet troops, only 36 years old. When the bad news came out, hundreds of thousands of compatriots in Shanghai went to the solitary military camp to offer condolences.
【Ecuador confirmed the first case of "secondary infection" in COVID-19, and the two infections were different strains.】
The Institute of Microbiology of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) reported the first case of COVID-19 reinfection in Ecuador on Saturday.
It compared the viral genome sequences in the two infections and found that they are different strains.
"The genomes of the virus present in an Ecuadorian with COVID-19 have been sequenced in May and again in August, showing that they are two different strains," tweeted the institute, adding that the two strains "belong to different genetic groups" and "have mutations at different sites, showing that they are different."
The patient was first diagnosed with COVID-19 in May, and again at the end of August.
In May the patient presented mild condition and in August showed moderate symptoms, who in both cases had positive PCR test results, despite a negative PCR test in July after having had the first infection.
As of August 29 local time, the country had a total of 112,906 confirmed cases. Its capital Quito, also the country's worst-hit region, had 21,112 confirmed cases, with 320 new confirmed cases in a single day.
Other countries and regions have also reported cases of reinfection.
8月24日,香港大學微生物學系團隊證實,一名新冠肺炎康復者自歐洲返回香港後,其新冠病毒檢測結果再次呈陽性,為第二次感染新冠病毒,而非「復陽」,屬全球首例;
當地時間25日,兩名歐洲患者(分別來自荷蘭和比利時)被證實再次感染新冠病毒;
China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region reported the first documented coronavirus reinfection in a 33-year-old man who contracted the virus again after recovery. Two European patients, one in the Netherlands and another in Belgium, were reported to be reinfected. Doctors also reported the first documented reinfection case in the United States.
【Neglected "menstrual poverty": How many people in the world can't afford this "commodity".】
The hashtag of "loose-packed sanitary pads" has come up as one of the trending topics on Chinese social media this week, sparking a heated discussion, with more than 1.2 billion views on Weibo.
The sudden rise of public awareness about period poverty sprang from a Weibo post of two screenshots. One is about a 100-piece packet of loose-packed pads that costs only 21.99 yuan (3.20 U.S. dollars), while another features a netizen worrying about the quality of the cheap pads, to which a woman replied, "Life is tough."
In fact, in Africa, South Asia and Europe and the United States, every month around the world, many girls worry about not having enough hygiene products and are forced to replace them with something else. As of February 2019, 500 million women worldwide were suffering from "menstrual poverty," according to the International Federation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (FIGO).
A new report released in 2018 by UNICEF and the international charity Water Aid shows that more than a third of girls in South Asia miss school during menstruation, mainly because of the lack of toilets and sanitary napkins in schools and the lack of adequate education on menstruation.
Only 36 per cent of women in India are eligible for disposable sanitary napkins, while the remaining 64 per cent can only use cloth, fruit shells, ashes, leaves, soil or cow dung during menstruation to deal with their blood loss.
In some African countries, girls are forced to choose to trade in sanitary napkins in exchange for regular school and work opportunities.
Period poverty is a global issue, which defines a lack of access to sanitary products due to financial constraints. According to the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics, up to 500 million women and girls are living in period poverty.
A report published by UNICEF and WaterAid found that more than a third of girls in South Asia miss school during their periods, mainly due to lack of access to toilets and pads in schools and no proper education about menstruation.
Take India, for example, where Survey statistics collected by Indian National Family Health Survey 2015-2016 estimates that roughly 36 percent of the country's menstruating females use sanitary napkins, while the rest use old rags, husk, ash, leaves, mud and soil and such other life-threatening materials to manage their flow.
In June, students from the Stand TogetHer organization of a high school in southwest China's Chengdu City have launched a program to donate menstrual pads to teenage girls in Zhaojue County, one of the poorest areas in China. They raised around 17,500 U.S. dollars online in just two days, providing a whole year's worth of pads for 700 girls.
【Are you "afraid of society"?】
Socializing is a human need.
But more and more post-90s and post-00s think they have more or less social phobias. In a recent survey conducted online by the Guangming Daily, only 69 out of 2,532 respondents said they had no social problems in real life, and 97 per cent said they avoided or even feared socializing because of fear, anxiety or lack of interest.
The survey also shows that while most young Chinese are reluctant to engage in real-life social activities, not everyone feels lonely about it.
For many young people in China, human interaction is not on their list of daily activities.
While this generation may not be comfortable engaging in real life social activities, not all of them are necessarily lonely, according to a recent survey by Chinese state media.
Most millennials and Gen-Z recognized they have more or less social phobia symptoms, according to the survey. Among 2,532 respondents, only 69 believed they had no problems interacting with people in the real world. Ninety-seven percent of respondents reported avoiding social activities at least once, due to either fear, anxiety or boredom. However, the other side of this number, is that many of them reported enjoying being alone – they live alone, build social networks online and said they get joy from the virtual world.
Millennials and Gen-Z in China have witnessed great changes in the country. They are different from their parents in terms of social behaviors and values. Most of them grew up in the 1990s, under the one-child policy, while their parents were busy participating in the urbanization and economic taking-off of China. Cities have also transformed traditional Chinese big families to smaller units made up of dad, mom and one child. It's been argued that this generation therefore can feel less personally connected to relatives, friends and neighbors.
On the other side, the generation is definitely internet savvy as they started to use cell phones, messaging tools, and search engines at a very young age. Compared with meeting up friends in a physical place, they prefer to reach out to people virtually and get things done. The all-scenario social apps penetrate every corner of their life, 24/7 social platforms cover their daily life – from making friends, learning to work and shopping.
It's a complicated truth. They appreciate the convenience brought by technologies but lose the chance to understand the charm of human interactions at the same time.
From tools such as QQ, WeChat, and Bilibili, social media tools have shaped how the younger generation in China connects with the world.
Let's imagine if you need to spend three hours on the road to meet a friend after being overworked the whole week, will you choose to rest at home talking to them via messaging tools? Given what it costs to social in real life, young Chinese would rather enjoy the hustle and bustle online.
However, there are some disadvantages to this type of interaction.
We all want to save time and trouble. But "when families get together without heart-to-heart communications, students keep online chatting in classes, and lovers are afraid of saying 'I love you' unless on social media, we call it 'alone together'," as per sociology and personality psychologist Sherry Turkle.
This indicates people are very possibly living in their own bubbles, using social media to keep the unceasing connection with the real-world though they feel deeper aloofness. Some Chinese young people use the connection to cure themselves as physical social life sometimes can't lead to open conversation and quality communications. But some are just enhancing social media use out of the desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing and the concern that others are having a "good time" without them.
While social media may help people avoid pressure and awkwardness in real life, this online interactions may be too easy for the digitally savvy.
Livestreams and chat rooms make it easy to make it seem like there's social interactions going on, but it could also be unconsciously locking a lot of young people into a circle of narrowness, extremity and isolation. Online or offline, it is definitely not a good sign in terms of having a mature social life.
Walking out of a comfort zone to welcome real connection with human beings is the key to settling social phobias. Given what we can't change, we might instead change how we think about the situation. Coming to the real-life social environment is an inevitable step for learning how to deal with stress, which is a skill that can be improved and developed over the course of a lifetime.
【On the Consumption View of "New White Collar".】
China's cross-border e-commerce is growing as young Chinese consumers spend more than their elders to raise their quality of life. Alibaba's Tmall Global and Kaola Global have conquered more than half of the market.
Kaola Global, acquired from gaming giant NetEase for 2 billion U.S. dollars last September, was transformed into a membership-based model in late August in a bid to become China's online Costco.
The platform's CEO Alvin Liu, who is one of Alibaba's vice presidents, sat down with CGTN to talk about how post-pandemic e-commerce will develop.
Q: What pushed Kaola to transform to a membership-based e-commerce platform?
A: Membership-based e-commerce is not a new concept. To be accurate, [its appearance] is related to a new group of people in China – the "new middle class." The reason we add "new" before "middle class" is because we have seen that the spending power and outlook of younger generations, including those born in the 80s and 90s, is very different to the traditional middle class. They believe the world belongs to them. They like goods from everywhere in the world and hope to find joy from them.
For example, inside the new middle class, there is a group of people that we call "the new white-collar workers."
The traditional white-collar worker may prefer to buy luxury goods, such as handbags and some luxury brands' [products]. But for "new-white collar workers," some might take good care of their pets and they want to spend a lot of money on their pets as they don't have a family yet. Some would like to spend [a lot] on their beauty, [I think] there are a lot of women who want to spend a lot of money on beauty. They are willing to do cosmetic procedures. They are willing to try new high-tech skincare products.
Q: Is the COVID-19 pandemic related to Kaola's transformation into membership-based e-commerce?
A: Yes, it is. Firstly, we have seen that the pandemic has accelerated the shift to online shopping, so more and more consumers, especially young consumers, can buy everything online. Secondly, we found that because a lot of young people have not been able to go abroad due to COVID-19, they badly want to know the new trends of products all over the world and enjoy the fun of shopping. And these can be better served through the membership-based model and online businesses.
Q: What is the future of membership-based e-commerce?
A: I think it is possible that a new membership-based e-commerce model for different groups of people will appear. Generally speaking, Chinese people's consumption and shopping will ultimately be a daily and normal behavior. But as different groups of people have different spending behaviors, there will be a lot of diversified membership-based models in e-commerce.
【US media positioning "Xinjiang concentration camp": opening a picture, the story depends on guessing.】
An investigative report published by the U.S. news aggregator BuzzFeed August 7 said that by comparing satellite cloud images with actual investigations, they found that 268 new detention facilities were built in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the past three years.
At the beginning of the report, the authors found that Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Baidu map was covered by many small gray squares, which considered to be signs of concentration camps in Xinjiang.
The report also pointed out that most of these newly built detention facilities are large-scale, with complete surrounding services, close to cities, and even built in industrial areas. Those buildings require a lot of material. Thus, it can be inferred that there is a high possibility that the detained minorities will be forced into labor.
In this way, by comparing satellite cloud images and unfounded inferences, this investigative report said it had confirmed more than 260 places of detention.
China's response to terrorism in Xinjiang has been repeatedly criticized by some Western media outlets as "authoritarian" and "inhumane." The vocational training centers have been at the center of controversy and painted as "concentration camps" where Chinese ethnic minorities are "indoctrinated."
So, what is vocational education and training really about?
Beginning in the 1990s, terrorism driven by religious extremism wreaked havoc across northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
On the premise of creating a caliphate, terrorists committed bombings, stabbings and incited mass riots that saw hundreds of police officers killed in the line of duty and countless civilian lives lost.
Last August, China released a white paper that laid out a detailed counter-terrorism strategy. The paper focused on the importance of vocational education and training centers, which were set up to redirect people away from religious extremism and provide trainees with the professional skills necessary for them to reenter society.
As many have pointed out, China's response to the highly-complex problem of terrorism within its borders isn't perfect. Yet, the course chosen – to educate those influenced by extremist ideology and try to change their lives for the better – is still far superior than America's War on Terror which saw the vast expansion of the state surveillance in the U.S. and started the endless cycle of brutality and hatred in faraway lands.
【Break 6 million! Cases in COVID-19 in the United States have surged, and serious outbreaks have occurred in universities.】
The novel coronavirus cases surpassed six million in the U.S on Sunday as many states in the Midwest reported increasing number of infections, according to a Reuters tally.
Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota have recently reported record one-day increases in new cases while Montana and Idaho are seeing record numbers of currently hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
Nationally, metrics on new cases, deaths, hospitalizations and the positivity rates of tests are declining, but there are emerging hotspots in the Midwest.
A majority of the new cases in Iowa are in the counties that are home to the University of Iowa and Iowa State University, which are holding some in-person classes. Colleges and universities around the country have seen outbreaks after students returned to campus, forcing some to switch to online-only learning.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo on Sunday said his state was sending a "SWAT team" to a State University of New York (SUNY) campus in Oneonta in upstate New York to contain a COVID-19 outbreak. Fall classes, which started last week at the college, were suspended for two weeks after more than 100 people tested positive for the virus, about 3 percent of the total student and faculty population, SUNY Chancellor Jim Malatras said.
"We have had reports of several large parties of our students at Oneonta last week, and unfortunately because of those larger gatherings, there were several students who were symptomatic of COVID," Malatras said.
Across the Midwest, infections have also risen after an annual motorcycle rally at Sturgis in South Dakota. It drew more than 365,000 people from across the country from August 7 to 16. The South Dakota health department said 88 cases were linked to the rally.
More than eight months into the pandemic, the U.S. continues to struggle with testing. The number of people getting tested for the virus has fallen in recent weeks.
Many health officials and at least 33 states have rejected the new COVID-19 testing guidance issued by the Trump administration last week that said those exposed to the virus and without symptoms may not need testing.
Public health officials believe the U.S. needs to test more frequently to find asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers to slow the spread of the disease.
Meanwhile, the U.S. and Britain have handled the coronavirus pandemic poorly, according to a survey released on August 27.
Only 46 percent of Britons and 47 percent of Americans think their government has coped well with the coronavirus pandemic, far lower than Denmark with 95 percent. They're the only two countries where a minority of people said the government had done well.
While the United States has the most recorded infections in the world, it ranks tenth based on cases per capita, with Brazil, Peru and Chile having higher rates of infection, according to a Reuters tally.
More than 80 percent of roughly 2,000 respondents said they are aware of food waste issues, and more than 84 percent of the Gen-Z group made it clear they were eager to reduce food waste, according to a recent poll conducted by China Youth Daily.
Additionally, attitudes about young people towards food waste varied. About 50 percent of survey respondents thought that young people were aware of the issue, while 23 percent thought otherwise. Specifically, respondents in second-tier Chinese cities said young people there are aware of food waste issues.
Saving food as a habit
"When I was young, my grandparents would scold me if I left food on my plate. Their generation had gone through tough times living in poverty, so they cannot accept that people don't cherish food," said Wang Feng, who works in Beijing. Influenced by his grandparents, Wang says food waste is still not a big issue among some of his friends. "It's not about being rich or poor, it's a way of life. Personally, I ask my friends how much they can have when we eat outside. Usually, everyone will eat the food, and people feel no pressure to bring any leftovers home."
"I always take the leftovers home if we eat out," said Zhou Xiao, who also lives in Beijing with her husband. With their busy lives in cities, Zhou added that she spends less time cooking and orders out more often. Half-serve orders, which have gained popularity on delivery apps, offer people like Zhou the option to reduce food waste without worrying about the portion size.
There is also a growing trend among Chinese people to serve fewer dishes at weddings and birthday banquets to reduce waste. While big portions used to be a social indicator, some are trying to cut down on the food waste. "Though some old relatives cannot understand it since they believe it's about 'face,' me and my wife agreed to cut the size and amount of our wedding dishes. It's heartbreaking to see all the untouched leftovers get thrown away," said Hailu Wang, a groom-to-be in Shanghai.
Campaigns to reduce food waste
Many young Chinese were born and raised in cities, with very little awareness of how food is grown and where it comes from. So food waste campaigns have focused on cultivating healthy habits.
Popular Chinese video apps like Douyin and Kuaishou display reminders like, "don't waste food" and "please develop healthy eating habits" when users search for "food-eating livestream" or "competitive eaters." Both are popular types of videos featuring people eating an excessive amount of food, and have since been a place for campaigns focused on food waste.
"Every time I make a food video at a restaurant, I will be offered a table full of dishes which is obviously too much for me. So I always pack up the leftovers after work," said Li Jiyun, who started posting food videos on Douyin in January.
"I got this habit in childhood, and I feel it would be a great waste if I just throw the food away after shooting," he added.
Last week, Meituan, a giant online food ordering platform, co-published a proposal with a number of business organizations, including the China General Chamber of Commerce and China Cuisine Association, calling on restaurants to stop food waste and help cultivate new eating habits for customers.
Following the proposal, merchants are asked to offer guidance for consumers, including reminding them during the ordering process about the taste of the ingredients, portion sizes and other information about the dishes, to help them avoid excessive ordering and food waste.
Food waste in catering in incredibly huge. Chinese catering associations in more than 18 provinces have also joined the campaign to eliminate food waste. China Cuisine Association announced that it had teamed up with Ele.me, the Alibaba Group Holding-owned food delivery platform, to launch a "half-dish plan," encouraging restaurants to provide customers with the option to order smaller portions.

【There were riots in the United States, and Biden criticized Trump for inciting violence: he was poisonous!】
Democratic U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden on Monday called for rioters and looters to be prosecuted and slammed President Donald Trump for stoking violence in American cities gripped by protests over police brutality and racial inequality.
Biden's speech in battleground state Pennsylvania was his most forceful counter yet to accusations by Trump that he is weak on crime and that leaders in his Democratic Party have lost control over the mass demonstrations that in some instances have turned violent.
"Rioting is not protesting. Looting is not protesting. Setting fires is not protesting," Biden said from a converted steel mill in Pittsburgh. "It's lawlessness, plain and simple, and those who do it should be prosecuted."
Republicans deny Trump is seeking to exacerbate violence with incendiary rhetoric. But Biden on Monday said Trump was sowing chaos.
"This president long ago forfeited any moral leadership in this country," Biden said. "He can't stop the violence because for years he has fomented it."
Trump, noting he had watched Biden's remarks, said in a tweet afterward that the former vice president seemed to blame police more than the "Rioters, Anarchists, Agitators, and Looters."
Biden has repeatedly condemned disorder at demonstrations but has defended peaceful protesters, arguing justice must be served in cases of "unwarranted police violence."
Swing state
Biden's visit to Pennsylvania, an important swing state that helped propel Trump to victory in 2016, marked an unusual trip afield for the former vice president, who has worked mostly from his Delaware home since March, when the coronavirus began spreading widely in the country.
Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are both due to campaign in Pennsylvania this week.
In Pittsburgh, Biden depicted an America that was unsafe under Trump, with COVID-19 killing thousands of people a week and an economy in tatters.
He said he wanted a country safe from the coronavirus, crime, racially motivated violence and "bad cops."
"And let's be crystal clear: Safe from four more years of Donald Trump," he said, calling Trump's presidency "a toxic presence in our nation."
"The incumbent president is incapable of telling us the truth, incapable of facing the facts and incapable of healing," Biden said.
Samuel DeMarco, the Republican chairman in Allegheny County, where Biden was speaking, said his speech showed "desperation."
"We have violent protests for 90 some days and now he's going to address it and try to blame Trump. Good luck with that," he said.
Demonstrations have swept the United States since the killing in May of George Floyd, a Black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
New protests erupted in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last week following the police shooting of Jacob Blake, another African American man, multiple times in front of his children, paralyzing him.
Trump is set to visit Kenosha on Tuesday, but Democrats including the state's governor have urged him to stay away. The White House said it is making efforts to reach Blake's family but has been unable to connect.
Just 37.4 percent of active personnel in the U.S. military support Trump's re-election, while 43.1 percent back Biden, according to a new poll Monday.
The poll by the Military Times and the Syracuse University Institute for Veterans and Military Families found that half of servicemen and women have an unfavorable view of Trump, and 42 percent strongly disapprove of him, compared to 38 percent with a favorable view of the Republican leader.
Support for Trump fell from the previous poll in December 2019, when he had a 42 percent favorable rating.
The poll of 1,018 people was taken before the recent Democratic and Republican party national conventions.
Trump has boasted of strong support among the military and has touted his increase in funding for the Pentagon's budget. But that record is clouded by frequent disputes with the Pentagon's leadership, including popular Defense Secretary Jim Mattis who resigned in December 2018, and policy conflicts with the current secretary, Mark Esper, and Joint Chiefs Chair General Mark Milley.
【I want to spend September in the cinema | What new films do you expect?】
"This movie is just like a cardiotonic for both moviegoers and movie theatres," said Tu Limei, manager of Pacific Cineplex's Wangfujing store in Chengdu city, Sichuan Province, noting that they have seen a steady rising trend in the past month.
On Chinese Valentine's Day, which fell on August 25 this year, the box office nationwide exceeded 73 million U.S. dollars – close to what it took in last year, a signal that movie lovers have indeed returned for real.
"I missed cinemas so much," a female moviegoer who asked not to be named told CGTN. "I had few other recreational activities during the shutdown. Actually, the attendance rate was still very low when I last visited here, only about 10 people for that movie. But it's another picture today. I'm very glad to see that people are gradually returning to normal life."
Some other newly released movies, like Hollywood-produced "Little Women," have also been welcomed by many viewers. Meanwhile, some reruns such as "Inception" remain popular.
Epidemic prevention measures are in place in all cinemas across the country. Customers receive temperature checks and must wear a mask. Screening halls are also regularly disinfected.
Social distancing is still being encouraged. In Chengdu, attendance at each screening is capped at 50 percent of capacity, a 20-percent increase over early limits.
Most viewers CGTN talked to said they welcome the measures.
"I just feel disappointed that we're not allowed to eat popcorn," said a young man.
China's film industry is expected to get another boost during the Golden Week holiday in early October, when many new blockbusters are set for release, including one featuring China's women's volleyball team starring Gong Li that had previously been set for release last February, and the long-awaited animation "Legend of Deification."
"With these blockbusters on agenda, I'm confident that the film market will only become more heated," Tu said.
Undoubtedly, the pandemic has been a great blow to China's film market, which has achieved a total box office of more than 64 billion yuan (about 9.4 billion U.S. dollars). During the past months, local authorities have issued various preferential policies to support the industry.
【To suppress Chinese students, the United States "added another knife."】
Local media outlets reported that the UNT has ended its relationship with the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) and required the students who received funding from the CSC to leave the country within a month. The university on August 26 revoked visas of the visiting scholars.
It's reported that the university sent emails to the scholars on August 26, notifying them that their access to school resources, including emails, servers and other materials, had been terminated. In addition, these students were not allowed to visit the campus unaccompanied.
The decision drew the ire of Chinese students studying at the UNT as they're left less than one month to buy plane tickets and leave the country. During the pandemic, a plane ticket from the U.S. to China is expensive, if available at all. Additionally, their study and life will be severely disrupted by the abrupt move.
So far, the UNT has not given any specific reason why it expelled the students sponsored by the CSC. One of its spokesperson told Denton Record-Chronicle, a local news outlet, that "UNT continues to welcome visiting scholars from around the world, including China," which was criticized by a UNT student as "laudable-sounding words."
Chinese students and scholars at the University of North Texas have launched an online petition, calling on the university to rescind the move.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying on Tuesday criticized the decision made by the University of North Texas (UNT) to expel 15 Chinese students, calling the move, if confirmed true, another example of the U.S. sabotage of people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
"However, out of selfish gains and political motives, some extremists, anti-China forces have been suppressing China's strategic need of development, making numerous lies to stigmatize and demonize Chinese students, and even oppressing Chinese students in the U.S. by abusing judicial power under baseless pretexts," said Hua, adding many Chinese parents, under such circumstances, were skeptical of sending their children to study in the U.S..
【The opening season under the epidemic: "The beast returns to the cage", and the city is full of youthful flavor.】
Schools across China are guiding its students to enter school premises in batches and at staggered times to ensure their safety amid the COVID-19 epidemic. These measures are being taken in accordance with the requirements of a notice issued by the Ministry of Education’s Leading Group of Work on Responding to the COVID-19 Epidemic.
Co-sponsored by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China, Ministry of Education, National Health Commission and China Central Radio and Television Station, this year's "First Class for New Semester," a yearly television show aired at the commencement of schools, was aired on September 1 as scheduled.
The show's theme this year was "Strong Youth, Strong China." Additionally, the model of "cloud classroom" was adopted for the first time, and a number of anti-epidemic heroes shared their stories about fighting the epidemic.
A number of factors this year made students unwilling to get back to classes, such as irregular work and rest hours, lack of sleep, procrastination and addiction to video games.
Parents are encouraged to take certain corrective measures and counsel their children who are anxious to start school amid the epidemic. For example, parents can limit children's time with electronic gadgets, adjust their work and rest hours, and give them avenues to release their emotional energy.
The Ministry of Education has formulated COVID-19 containment plans for autumn and winter in accordance with the actualities of institutions of higher learning, primary and secondary schools, and kindergartens, requiring them to strictly implement the measures on a daily basis.
【United States: It will not participate in any global COVID-19 vaccine cooperation related to WHO.】
The Trump administration said Tuesday that it will not work with an international cooperative effort to develop and distribute a COVID-19 vaccine because it does not want to be constrained by multilateral groups like the World Health Organization (WHO).
Asked to confirm the report from The Washington Post, White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a statement: "Under President Trump's leadership, vaccine and therapeutic research, development, and trials have advanced at unprecedented speed to deliver groundbreaking, effective medicines driven by data and safety and not held back by government red tape."
Some nations have worked directly to secure supplies of vaccine, but others are pooling efforts to ensure success against a disease that has no geographical boundaries.
That cooperative effort, linked with the WHO, would allow nations to take advantage of a portfolio of potential vaccines to ensure their citizens are quickly covered by whichever ones are deemed effective. The WHO says even governments making deals with individual vaccine makers would benefit from joining COVAX because it would provide backup vaccines in case the ones being made through bilateral deals with manufacturers aren't successful.
Rep. Ami Bera, D-Calif., said the administration's decision was shortsighted and will hamper the battle to end the pandemic.
"Joining COVAX is a simple measure to guarantee U.S. access to a vaccine – no matter who develops it first," tweeted Bera, a medical doctor. "This go-it-alone approach leaves America at risk of not getting a vaccine."
The administration's decision, paired with the U.S. withdrawal from the WHO, means the U.S. is abdicating America's global leadership in fighting pandemics, according to Tom Hart, North America director at The ONE Campaign, an advocacy organization fights extreme poverty and preventable disease.
"Not only does this move put the lives of millions around the world at risk, it could completely isolate Americans from an effective vaccine against COVID-19," Hart said.
Suerie Moon, co-director of the Global Health Center at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, told The Washington Post that the U.S. not participating in the initiative was a "real blow" to the global effort to secure a vaccine.
"The behavior of countries when it comes to vaccines in this pandemic will have political repercussions beyond public health," she added. "It's about, are you a reliable partner or, at the end of the day, are you going to keep all your toys for yourself?"
13.Netflix
【Netflix announced the filming of "Three-body" drama Liu Cixin as a consultant.】
The world's largest streaming service Netflix is to make popular Chinese sci-fi "The Three-Body Problem" trilogy into TV series.
Chinese author Liu Cixin and translator of the English versions Ken Liu became the series' consulting producers, and David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, creators of popular TV series "Game of Thrones," were appointed as the writers and executive producers.
"The first time I read 'The Three-Body Problem' trilogy (Remembrance of Earth's Past), it changed what science fiction meant to me forever," said Netflix original series drama vice-president Peter Friedlander in a statement. He assembled a "talented and thoughtful creative team" to do the adaption, with everyone involved sharing a "passion and high esteem for the books."
The first book of the trilogy was published in 2008 and its English translation followed in 2014. The novel made Liu the first Asian to win the Hugo Award, the Oscars of science fiction and fantasy, in 2015.
《三體》三部曲在全世界已出版19種語言版本,包括德語、法語、西班牙語和日語等;
According to the People's Daily, as of August 2019, the trilogy had been translated into 19 languages, including German, French, Spanish and Japanese, and a total of 21 million copies were sold, with the English version alone sold one million copies.
【First time! Tsinghua University ranks among the top 20 universities in the Times Higher Education World Rankings.】
Times Higher Education (THE) on Wednesday announced that China's Tsinghua University has become the first ever Asian university to achieve a top 20 position in the rankings since the current methodology was launched in 2011.
According to the THE World University Rankings 2021, Tsinghua University (joint 20th) climbed three places since last year despite a record 1,527 institutions qualifying this time round.
Towards the top of the table, Peking University (23rd), Fudan University (joint 70th), Zhejiang University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (100th) all improved their positions since last year. This has resulted in a record number of Chinese mainland universities ranking in the top 100 since the rankings began.
Phil Baty, chief knowledge officer at THE, told Xinhua that this year marks a major milestone, as Chinese mainland disrupts the traditional domination of Western universities at the top of the table, breaking into the top 20 for the first time, and doubling its representation in the top 100 compared with last year.
This positive trend for Chinese mainland universities "looks as though it will continue, particularly as we navigate the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. With a likely decrease in the international flow of students and staff around the world and possible funding challenges among the West's established higher education sectors we could see China, and Asia more widely, capitalize," he said.
"If homegrown talent from China stay in China instead of making its traditional migration to elite Western institutions, particularly in the U.S. and the UK, we could see the start of a dramatic rebalancing of the global knowledge economy," he added.
Britain's University of Oxford retained top spot for the fifth consecutive year. The latest edition of the Rankings saw 18 countries and regions represented in the top 100, and 93 represented overall, demonstrating that geopolitical competition in the global knowledge economy is intensifying.
A shift in power has been noted as the research quality of the middle-ranking Chinese mainland and U.S. universities (middle 50 percent of ranked institutions) is beginning to converge for the first time, according to THE.
The THE World University Rankings 2021 saw 141 universities qualify for the first time. India has the highest total of debutant universities with 14, closely followed by the U.S. (13), Chinese mainland (10), Russia and Japan (both 9), and Iran (8).
The THE World University Rankings is seen as one of the most balanced and comprehensive global rankings, with 13 separate performance metrics covering the full range of core activities for research-intensive universities: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook.
