In the UK, a new coronavirus variant has led to several countries imposing traveling bans and restrictions to the nation. Many countries including Sweden and Spain reported cases related to the variant. A second variant has also been detected in people who were contacts of cases from recent travel to South Africa. The second variant is believed to be more transmissible.

Five days after China concluded its historic 23-day Chang』e 5 lunar mission, Chinese space engineers made a new achievement with the maiden flight of the country’s newest carrier rocket. On Dec 22, China’s new medium-lift carrier rocket Long March 8 made its maiden flight, sending five satellites into planned orbit, according to the China National Space Administration. The rocket blasted off from the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site in Hainan province.

12月26日，全國人大常委會會議表決通過刑法修正案（十一）和新修訂的預防未成年人犯罪法，未成年人刑責年齡降至12歲。已滿12周歲不滿14周歲的人，犯故意殺人、故意傷害罪，致人死亡或者以特別殘忍手段致人重傷造成嚴重殘疾，情節惡劣，經最高人民檢察院核准追訴的，應當負刑事責任。已滿十四周歲不滿十六周歲的人，犯故意殺人、強姦、販賣毒品等嚴重罪行的，應當負刑事責任。
China's top legislature on Dec 26 voted to adopt a revision to the Law on the Prevention of Juvenile Delinquency. Amendment XI to the Criminal Law was also passed, lowering the minimum age at which a minor may be charged with a criminal offense to 12 under special circumstances and through special procedures. If a juvenile who has reached the age of 12, but is under 14, commits intentional homicide or inflicts an injury that leads to death, or causes severe injury to the person, reducing the person to utter disability by resorting to cruel means, he or she shall bear criminal responsibility upon attestation and approval of the Supreme People's Procuratorate (SPP). Children aged 14-16 can be held criminally liable if they commit serious crimes such as murder, rape, and drug smuggling or trafficking.
