With BMW Gesture Control, selected functions can be operated by means of defined hand movements. Simple gestures such as 'swiping' or 'pointing' are identified in the recognition area above the centre console and trigger a function such as accepting or rejecting an incoming telephone call. Volume can be adjusted by circular motions of the index finger. Gesture Control complements the existing control systems such as the iDrive Touch Controller.

Carbon Core

A core element of BMW EfficientLightweight in the new BMW 7 Series is to use an innovative mixed construction for the body. Using steel, aluminium and in particular innovative carbon fibre (carbon fibre–reinforced plastic, CFRP) not only meets all the requirements for driving dynamics and comfort, but also sets whole new standards in the luxury class. At the centre of the holistic concept stands the Carbon Core, showcasing its weight advantage compared with steel in the torsional stiffness of the body. The Active air stream kidney grille represents the cutting edge of aerodynamic performance. When a cooling airflow is not needed, it electronically closes the radiator grille with its air vents and thereby reduces the amount of air flowing into the engine bay. This optimises both the aerodynamics and consumption rates.

2-axle air suspension

The 2-axle air suspension guarantees extremely smooth and comfortable driving, while simultaneously ensuring great driving dynamics and consistent elevation. Unlike steel suspension, air suspension consists of air-filled rubber pads. The air pressure in the pads is adjusted to keep the vehicle evenly elevated no matter what the load conditions are. The vehicle is lowered by 10 mm in SPORT mode generally and in COMFORT mode when travelling at high speeds only. Additionally, the vehicle can be raised using a separate control unit, the level-adjustment button. It can be raised by 20 mm. Regardless of the Driving Experience Control settings, the vehicle can be raised at speeds of up to approximately 35 km/h. Above this speed, the vehicle is automatically lowered from its elevated position.

Adaptive mode

Adaptive Mode is an intelligent and interactive function in Driving Experience Control. In addition to Adaptive Mode, the driver can also select the SPORT, COMFORT or ECO PRO modes. The Adaptive Mode influences the Dynamic Damper Control, the steering and Steptronic transmission and continually adapts the settings to suit the current driving situation and in accordance with the selected driving mode (COMFORT/SPORT). When in Adaptive Mode, the system takes account of numerous indicators such as kickdown, steering wheel movements and cruise control, along with the driver's individual style of driving. Furthermore, the system also relies on interaction with real-time navigation to adjust the suspension control in preparation for bends, intersections or different road conditions.

Welcome Light Carpet

The Welcome Light Carpet function illuminates the area in front of the car doors when entering and exiting, creating an elegant and welcoming atmosphere. LED projectors that are positioned out of sight under the side skirts illuminate the ground next to the vehicle with a white light pattern, thus creating an elegant welcome scene for passengers. Furthermore, the light makes it easier to identify ground unevenness or puddles in the dark. The light pattern covers the entire door area. The projectors are not sensitive to dirt, ensuring that the Welcome Light Carpet function can also be relied upon in poor weather conditions.

Executive Drive Pro

Executive Drive Pro is a suspension control system that combines high driving comfort with dynamic driving characteristics. Thanks to the active sway-stabilization - the first to work electro-mechanically - movement of the body is minimised when driving straight and when rounding corners. The system is based on active stabilizers on the front and rear axles and continuously regulates the suspension during the journey. The combination of the Dynamic Damper Control with the inclusion of additional information from the navigation system, from the driving style analysis and the Route-ahead information from the camera all increase driving comfort even more.

BMW Touch Command

BMW Touch Command includes a tablet with 7" display that is integrated into
the rear, and which comes with the full functionality of an android tablet and is
connected to the systems in the car. This means that all car settings, configurations and operations are operable from any seat in the car.

Using the tablet, the rear seats and front passenger seat can be adjusted. Air
conditioning, ventilation and seat heating in the rear can be operated, as well as
the interior lighting with Ambient light, the blinds for the glass sunroof and the
roller sunblinds.

Remote Control Parking

The Remote Control Parking function allows the driver to conveniently hop
out of the vehicle and then park it via remote control by moving it forward into
a tight sparking space or garage. The driver activates the remote-controlled
parking function from outside the vehicle via the BMW display key.

The entire parking procedure is monitored by Park Distance Control (PDC),
the Parking Assistant and the Surround View sensors. In order to use the
remote-controlled parking function, the vehicle has to be positioned straight
and facing a parking space or garage and with a maximum deviation of 10° in
relation to the parking space's longitudinal axis. The vehicle then steers itself
automatically. The parking procedure can be terminated at any time via the
key. Needless to say, the vehicle brakes automatically (and stops if necessary)
whenever an obstacle is detected.

Once parked, the engine can be switched off via the key. And when it's time to
move on, the engine can also be restarted via the key. During remote-controlled
pulling out of a parking space, the vehicle automatically reverses in a straight
line but doesn't steer. In addition to remote-controlled parking, the BMW display key can also be used to activate the Start/Stop engine function and the
Lock/Unlock function.

Surround View + 3D View

Surround View includes the camera-based functions Rear view camera, Panorama View, Top View and 3D View. Cameras at the front and back of the exterior mirrors provide a 360° view around the vehicle. In addition to the simple depiction of the driving space to the rear, Top View offers the driver a look over the door and the lane area to the car sides for more convenient manoeuvring. In 3D View, a computer generated 3D view is shown simultaneously, for an even better overview when parking. Panorama View makes navigating in areas with low visibility, such as driveways or confusing intersections, safer. Two digital cameras on the left and right of the front of the car capture the traffic situation in front of the vehicle. This enables early detection of oncoming traffic so that the driver can react appropriately. The Side View function is automatically deactivated when the car reaches 15 km/h. The driver can switch between the three functions Top View, Panorama View and 3D View. The last selected function will be automatically reactivated when the system is next used. The camera systems are activated when the car is put into reverse or the PDC button or Panorama View button is pressed. The images captured by the cameras are shown on the Control Display.

The Executive Lounge offers the greatest possible seat comfort for the seat behind the front passenger. The seat itself features a massage function and various adjustment possibilities that make travelling extremely pleasant and relaxing. The Executive Lounge seat is outfitted with a remarkably comfortable upholstery and can be electrically adjusted to a variety of positions. For maximum leg room, the front passenger seat can be moved far forwards and the backrest and headrest folded forwards. An electric folding and adjustable footrest on the backrest of the front passenger seat yields a particularly comfortable resting position. The equipment also includes a folding table, the BMW Touch Command tablet integrated into the charging holder in the rear console, as well as the Rear-seat entertainment Experience.

Rear-seat passengers can choose between eight different massage functions in the backrest and seat surface in order to stimulate or relax muscles in a targeted manner, leading to less pressure on the spinal discs. These massage programmes can be set to one of three intensity levels.

The eight programmes are divided into the categories mobilisation, relaxation and vitalisation. The mobilisation function not only massages individual body parts such as the pelvis or the upper back, but also the entire body. The spinal column is also relieved with the help of specified active exercises. The back, shoulders and lumbar region are gently massaged by the relaxation function. The vitalisation function leads to a noticeable relaxation and invigoration of the
body, which is particularly beneficial on long journeys. The rear-seat entertainment monitor displays an animated training programme (Vitality Programme) in synch with the massage actuators. The entire range of programmes and functions is controlled via the BMW Touch Command for the rear-seat entertainment system.

Ambient Air Package

At the push of a button, the Ambient Air Package fills the interior of the car with a subtle, pleasant fragrance. Eight fragrances, belonging to four themes, are available, all specially composed for the vehicle. Two can be used alternately in the vehicle at a time. The intensity of the fragrance can be set to three levels. This function can be activated via the iDrive Controller and the iDrive menu, or directly via a button on the air conditioning control unit. The function is shown on the Control Display. While the fragrance is being released, air from the exterior is filtered and purified. Air quality is also significantly improved through oxygen ionisation. The eight fragrances are divided into four categories: "Blue Suite" with fresh water fragrances, "Green Suite" with fresh plant fragrances, "Golden Suite" with warm, rich fragrances and "Authentic Suite" with natural fragrances. All of the fragrances last for roughly six months with average use and can be ordered as Original BMW Accessories.

The Panorama glass roof provides mesmerising views and allows a great deal of light into the interior, lending it a particularly spacious and open ambience. If the sunlight is too bright, the roller sunblind can be simply and smoothly closed. With slide and lift functions, the Panorama glass roof provides a variety of options for great ventilation. If the glass roof is put into venting position, the sunblind is automatically rolled back to allow the desired airflow. And the integrated wind deflector automatically springs into action to minimise turbulence when driving with the roof open.

The Panorama glass roof Sky Lounge gives passengers a clear view of the sky day and night, while creating a generous, open sense of space. The light-flooded interior makes an exceptionally attractive and luxurious impression. Electric roller sunblinds for the front and rear are adjusted separately to offer pleasant shade from direct sunlight. When it's dark an atmospheric mood is created by a light design made up of more than 15,000 light elements. The light design can be switched between the six colours of the Ambient interior lighting. It provides a variety of additional options for ventilating the interior with its slide and lift functions in the front. An integrated, automatically extending wind deflector protects passengers against draughts, even when driving with an open roof.

Telephony with wireless charging incorporates a wireless charging dock and an integrated warning system in case the phone is forgotten. In addition, two fully functional USB ports are available, each with up to two amperes of charge current for quickly charging mobile devices. The roof aerial ensures that mobile reception is at least as good as it is outside of the vehicle. A second microphone with an additional volume control ensures optimum comprehensibility when using the hands-free function, even from the front passenger seat. Two mobile phones and a mobile audio player can be connected simultaneously via Bluetooth. The telephony package includes Bluetooth Office with access to the calendar, SMS and email functions for compatible smartphones. Furthermore, a wireless NFC interface enables mobile phones to be connected to the vehicle quickly and easily. An integrated WiFi hotspot provides the vehicle with audio and video streaming options, as well as a connection to the internet via the BMW integrated sim card and 4G/LTE mobile communication.

Innovative speaker materials strike the perfect balance between sound quality and vehicle weight. The Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system diamond tweeters are made of pure synthetic diamonds. This distinctly light and extremely resilient material is ideal for producing high-frequency signals. Further highlights include the NautilusTM technology, which deflects undesirable sound radiation from the back of the dome, allowing a three-dimensional sound to be created, as well as two mid-range speakers with Kevlar technology and two central subwoofers with Rohacell technology. The stainless-steel speaker trim features the exclusive Fibonacci cutout design. The BMW Individual cooling box keeps food and drink chilled to either 4° C or 10° C even when external temperaturesis very high. The BMW Individual cooling box is integrated into the rear seat backrest and is easily accessed from the passenger area when the centre armrest is folded down. A push mechanism moves the contents towards the passenger when opened, allowing chilled items to be removed quickly and easily.

Its compact construction - the cooling box and compressor are arranged one above the other - takes up only a very small amount of luggage compartment space. When the cooling box is not needed, it can be removed from the luggage compartment in one easy move, making the full luggage compartment
capacity available for use once more.

The Extended rear air-conditioning provides individual climate comfort for the rear passengers. The equipment features two additional vents with control units in the headliner above the external rear seats. An additional air conditioning unit in the luggage compartment increases the system's power and allows for fast, comfortable heating and cooling, especially in the rear.

The Life-Drive architecture consists of two separate units that complement each other perfectly. The upper Life Module is the passenger compartment. True to the BMW EfficientDynamics principle of intelligent lightweight construction, it is made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic - also known as CFRP or simply carbon. This optimum material mix ensures the highest dynamics and, at the same time, the best efficiency. The lower Drive Module incorporates the BMW eDrive electric system with the large lithium-ion high-voltage battery. The battery cells are fully integrated into the under section and fill the entire middle area of the Drive Module. This ensures optimal axle load distribution, a low centre of gravity and, therefore, excellent driving dynamics. Aluminium profile surrounds the high-voltage battery and protects it from external influences.

BMW i3: As the BMW eDrive system as a whole is significantly more compact than a comparable combustion engine, it is possible to house the electric motor, transmission unit and drive electronics within a very small area over the driven rear axle, thereby saving space.

In addition to charging the vehicle at home, it is now possible – thanks to the development of the ChargeNow mobility service by BMW – to charge BMW electric and plug-in hybrid automobiles while on-the-go anywhere. The fact that the public charging stations of numerous providers have amalgamated to form a huge network also makes life easier.

All the ChargeNow charging stations can be easily located in the navigation system with the help of BMW ConnectedDrive, the BMW Remote app or the ChargeNow website. The car's charging port is located behind a flap on the front left side panel, which is where an LED light ring on the charging port provides information regarding the vehicle's charging status, even from the outside.

Get into a comfortably cool car in summer and a warm car with clear windows in winter – the stationary heating and cooling in the BMW plug-in hybrid makes it possible. Thanks to an electrical refrigerant compressor and a tankless electrical heater, the automatic air conditioning functions almost silently, even when the engine is off. Two different departure times can be scheduled in advance. Half an hour before the planned departure, heating, cooling and ventilation to the selected temperature is implemented by an intelligent control system. The system is operated by the iDrive Controller inside the car, or conveniently with a compatible smartphone using the BMW Remote Services app.
