「鼠年」的「鼠」,到底是mouse還是rat呢?

我們即將送走豬年，迎來鼠年。你知道「鼠年」的英文表達是什麼嘛？

首先，咱們來聊聊在表達「X年」時的語序問題。

比如「豬年」，不能說pig year，而應該說the Year of the Pig。因為pig year不是英語的表述習慣。

一個驗證英文是否地道的好辦法就是「Google it」，用 Google 搜索一下英文世界到底有無這種說法。

當我們輸入了「pig year」，看看搜索結果是什麼：

檢索出來的文章標題都是「Year of the Pig」，不是「pig year」，所以我們在表達中國「生肖年」的地道英語結構是：year of the + 某個生肖的英文。

再來聊聊「鼠」的單詞。

在我們的印象中，「鼠」有兩個單詞：mouse和rat。

Mouse是單數，複數形式為mice；rat的複數很簡單，就是rats。那麼這兩個詞有何區別？下面是牛津詞典截圖：

mouse: animal that is covered in fur and has a long thin tail. Mice live in fields, in people’s houses or where food is stored.

mouse指全身灰毛，尾巴細長的動物。它們生活在田地裡、人們的家中，以及儲藏食物的地方。

rat: a small animal with a long tail, that looks like a large mouse, usually considered a pest.

一種有著長尾巴的動物，看著像大型的mouse，通常被認為是pest（害蟲，有害的動物）。

通過比較兩個詞的定義，我們能找到的一個差別就是：rat是一種體型更大的 mouse。

再來看一張詳細對比圖，其中列出了mouse和rat更多差別：

左邊是 mouse，右邊是 rat

歸納一下，mouse和rat大致有這四種區別：

❶ mouse體型小（身長12-20cm）；rat體型大（身長40+cm）

❷ mouse尾巴有毛（hairy）；rat 尾巴有鱗（scaly）

❸ mouse的嘴是尖的（triangular）；rat 的嘴相對更平（blunt）

❹ mouse每天產生的老鼠屎（droppings）是 rat 的兩倍

說了這麼多，「鼠年」到底用mouse還是rat呢？

雖然mouse和rat都不是什麼好東西，但老外可能更傾向於喜歡小巧玲瓏的 mouse。你看「米老鼠」叫「Mickey Mouse」，不叫「Mickey Rat」；電腦的「滑鼠」叫 mouse，不叫rat。

但對於咱們中國人而言，如果非得在小耗子和大耗子裡選一個，那麼更大、更肥、更富態的「大耗子」（rat）恐怕更適合當中國鼠年的吉祥物吧！

China Daily一篇文章中，作者如是介紹「鼠年」的「鼠」：

Rat is the first animal in the Chinese zodiac, by dint not of size or power but resourcefulness, hitching a legendary ride on an ox to win a race against 12 awesome contenders. It's got a generally positive image, as a symbol of fertility, and even its negative connotations of cunning, stealth and self-preservation have a positive side.

鼠是中國生肖裡的第一個動物，不是因為體型或力量，而是因為足智多謀——當年面對12位強有力競爭者，它躍上牛背贏得了比賽。鼠因繁殖能力強的象徵而獲得了大體上較為積極的形象，狡猾、偷竊、自我保護的消極內涵也有了積極意思。

你還可以用google檢驗一下，輸入「the Year of the Mouse」後，google檢索到的信息基本都是「the Year of the Rat」。

可見在英文世界中，「the Year of the Rat」已經成為一個約定俗成的表達，大家記住即可。

最後，今天既然講到老鼠，順便講兩個常用的關於mouse和rat的諺語：

第一句跟mouse有關：

▌When the cat’s away the mice will play.

Mice是mouse的複數，整句話字面意思是「當貓不在的時候，老鼠就出來玩耍了」。意譯一下就是「老虎不在家，猴子稱霸王」。

無論中文還是英文，念起來都朗朗上口，畫面感很強。

第二句跟rat有關：

▌「smell a rat」

這是半句話，前面還得加個主語，比如：I smell a rat.

字面意思是「我聞到了老鼠的味道」，實際上表示「我覺得很可疑」，還可以意譯為「我覺得有蹊蹺」、「我感覺有貓膩」。

中文裡的「貓膩」，在英文中要用「rat」，有趣吧？
