Winter Olympics 2018: Controversial end costs Canadian women short track medal
February 20, 2018 8:10am ESTFebruary 20, 2018
The women's short track 3,000 m relay final Tuesday in Pyeongchang turned into a bitter result for the Canadian foursome of Valerie Maltais, Kasandra Bradette, Kim Boutin and Marianne St-Gelais.
Originally in place for a silver medal after the wild final race which was full of falls and crashes, the Canadian women ultimately were penalized and disqualified following a lengthy deliberation by judges.

With three laps remaining, Maltais fell, seemingly tripped by a South Korean racer. In a chaotic scene after the race, the Canadian women nervously awaited the judges' decision and then were stunned to find out they had been disqualified along with China.

As a result, Italy moved from third place to second, taking home the silver, while the Netherlands won the bronze medal after winning the Group B final, elevated after the two disqualifications in Group A.
South Korea won the women's short track 3,000 m gold medal for the sixth time in the last seven Winter Olympics. They also took home gold from Sochi in 2014.
It is the first time Canada did not medal in this Olympic event.
1. Winter Olympics 2018: Controversial end costs Canadian women short track medal
February 20, 2018
1a.The end of the race was controversial when people were debating on it,and they do not agree/disagree with each other. We call this controversial.
1b.When the controversial end costs Canadian women short track medal, that means the Canadians lost their medal, they did not win the medal as they wete supposed to do.
2.The women's short track 3,000 m relay final Tuesday in Pyeongchang turned into a bitter result for the Canadian foursome of Valerie Maltais, Kasandra Bradette, Kim Boutin and Marianne St-Gelais.
2a..Well, a relay race is a team sport. That means ,for example, you run 100 meters, and then I will run the next 100 meters and then he or she will continue the rest parts until our team finishes the whole race.
2b.A final is a match to decide who wins the first prize(gold) ,who wins the second prize(silver) and who wins the third(bronze)
2c. When it turned into a bitter result for them, they lost the race/the medal.
3. Originally in place for a silver medal after the wild final race which was full of falls and crashes, the Canadian women ultimately were penalized and disqualified following a lengthy deliberation by judges.
3a. Okay.Got you.In sports we say to penalize an athlete if he or she fouls,we do not say Punish someone.Say to penalize him.
3b.a lengthy deliberation is a long discusdion, a long debate, a long argument.
3c. Okay,in racing, we say A Judge, we won't say A Referee as used in boxing. That is the difference.I will remember this.
3d. When they were penalized and disqualified, that means their medal was not allowed, was not accepted, or was not recognized by the judges.
4. It is the first time Canada did not medal in this Olympic event.
4a. It is the first time Canada did not medal(win a medal ) in this Olympic event(games).
