Brian Chang et al. studied how seabirds, especially gannets, can plunge-dive into water at high speeds without sustaining neck injuries. The authors analyzed morphological features from a gannet specimen and data from controlled experimental dives, and found that hydrodynamic drag on the heads of diving seabirds might induce buckling in the birds' necks, and that strong neck muscles allow the birds to survive the compression forces.
