讀《小王子》原著,學地道英文表達 | Chapter1

每個人心中都有一個小王子，代表著永遠的純真。所有的大人都曾經是小孩，雖然，只有少數人記得。

Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest. It was a picture of a boa constrictor in the act of swallowing an animal. Here is a copy of the drawing:

我六歲那年，有一次，在一本書裡看見一幅很棒的圖畫，那本書叫《親身經歷的故事》，寫原始森林。那幅圖畫上，一條大蟒蛇正在吞吃一頭猛獸。我把它描了下來。

In the book it said: 「Boa constrictors swallow their prey whole, without chewing it. After that they are not able to move, and they sleep through the six months that they need for digestion.」

書裡寫著：「大蟒蛇把獵物整個吞下，嚼都不嚼。然後，它動彈不了，它得睡上整整六個月，才能消化肚子裡的東西。」

I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle. And after some work with a coloured pencil I succeeded in making my first drawing. My Drawing Number One. It looked like this:

對原始森林的探險，我當時想得很多。於是，我也用一支彩色鉛筆，畫出了我的第一張畫。畫作第1號。就像這樣：

I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.

我把我的傑作拿給大人們看，問他們：「我的畫是不是讓你們很害怕？」

But they answered: 「Frighten? Why should anyone be frightened by a hat?」

他們回答：「一頂帽子有什麼好怕的？」

My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing. I drew the inside of the boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. They always need to have things explained. My Drawing Number Two looked like this:

可我畫的不是帽子呀。我畫的是一條大蟒蛇，正在消化一頭大象。於是我把大蟒蛇的肚子裡面也畫了出來，好讓大人們看個明白。大人們老是要人解釋。這是畫作第2號：

The grown-ups』 response, this time, was to advise me to lay aside my drawings of boa constrictors, whether from the inside or the outside, and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic and grammar. That is why, at the age of six, I gave up what might have been a magnificent career as a painter. I had been disheartened by the failure of my Drawing Number One and my Drawing Number Two. Grown-ups never understand anything by themselves, and it is tiresome for children to be always and forever explaining things to them.

大人們勸我不要再畫大蟒蛇了，還是專心學地理、歷史、算術和語法吧。就這樣，我六歲時放棄了畫家生涯。畫作第1號和第2號的挫折，讓我洩了氣。大人們自己什麼也弄不懂，卻要孩子們一遍一遍地解釋，真夠累人的……

So then I chose another profession, and learned to pilot aeroplanes. I have flown a little over all parts of the world; and it is true that geography has been very useful to me. At a glance I can distinguish China from Arizona. If one gets lost in the night, such knowledge is valuable.

我只好另選職業。我學會了駕駛飛機。世界各地，我差不多都去過。的確，地理對我很有用。只要看一眼，我就能認出，哪裡是中國，哪裡是亞利桑那。如果夜裡迷航了，這很管用。

In the course of this life I have had a great many encounters with a great many people who have been concerned with matters of consequence. I have lived a great deal among grown-ups. I have seen them intimately, close at hand. And that hasn’t much improved my opinion of them.

在我的生活中，我同很多嚴肅的人打過很多的交道。在大人們中間，我經歷了很多。我就近觀察他們。不過，我對他們的印象，沒有多大改變。

Whenever I met one of them who seemed to me at all clear-sighted, I tried the experiment of showing him my Drawing Number One, which I have always kept. I would try to find out, so, if this was a person of true understanding. But, whoever it was, he, or she, would always say:

碰到稍微聰明一點的大人，我會拿出一直保存著的畫作第1號給他看。我想知道他能不能看懂。但大人總是這麼回答我：

「這是一頂帽子。」

Then I would never talk to that person about boa constrictors, or primeval forests, or stars. I would bring myself down to his level. I would talk to him about bridge, and golf, and politics, and neckties. And the grown-up would be greatly pleased to have met such a sensible man.

所以，我就懶得跟他說大蟒蛇、原始森林或者星星了。我只好說一些他能懂的事情。我跟他說橋、高爾夫、政治或者領帶。大人就挺滿意，覺得認識了一個正常人……
