原創 Alec Soth SCOP

This is Alec Soth and I’m excited to be doing an Instagram takeover in advance of my upcoming show at the Shanghai Center Of Photography. The photograph above is one of the earliest in the exhibition. It was made twenty-five years ago not far from where I’m writing now in St. Paul, Minnesota. I』ve since forgotten the name of this man, but I remember his words: 「I’m one of the great minds of my generation.」
For me, photography is more about mystery than knowledge. Was this man a genius? What were his plans for those suitcases? Where is he now?
In the end, photography is always about the mystery of time. How is it possible that a quarter of a century has passed so quickly? Yesterday I was traveling with an assistant who wasn’t even alive when I took this picture. At the airport I mentioned to her that luggage didn’t have wheels when I was young. She looked at me with utter disbelief. I'd like to think that the man in this photo is the genius that came up with the idea of putting wheels on suitcases.

這兩個男人都叫做 Bill(第二個男人的名字拼寫只有一個L)。
The first picture was made at a singles' dance in Minnesota in 1997. The second was made at a ballroom dance class in Ohio in 2012. Both men are named Bill (though the second one only spells it with one 'L'.) Both pictures are in my upcoming exhibition, "The Space Between Us" opening on August 1 at the Shanghai Center Of Photography.

Like most of the photographs from my self-published zine, 「The Last Days of W,」 this one was originally made on a magazine assignment. In 2008, the Telegraph Magazine commissioned the writer Mick Brown and me to travel around the US and China for a four-part series entitled 「The Eagle & The Dragon.」 For the final issue, Mick and a I traveled to the US Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California (where this picture was taken) and to various sites in China connected to the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
As is often the case with magazine jobs, my favorite photograph wasn’t published. But along with it incorporating it into 「The Last Days of W,」 this picture will be prominently displayed in my upcoming show at the Shanghai Center Of Photography.

Vince 身後的牆上掛著一張他朋友 Peter Hujar 拍的照片,而 Hujar 在他的第一本書《Portraits in Life and Death》 (1976) 中收錄了一張 Vince 的肖像。
This is my 2018 portrait of the critic Vince Aletti. On the wall behind Vince hangs a photograph by his friend Peter Hujar. Hujar included a portrait of Aletti in his first book, "Portraits in Life and Death" (1976).
Hujar was the primary influence for my most recent book, "I Know How Furiously Your Heart Is Beating." This image and many others from that series will be included in my upcoming show at the Shanghai Center Of Photography.
