考研題目中經常出現的習慣用法歸納
1)more A than B，less B than A，not so much B as/but A
這幾個表達的常見意思都是「比……更……」，但在實際翻譯過程中無法通順表達，這時，均可可以理解為：與其說是B，不如說是A。
注意：翻譯時候的位置變化，比如more A than B中，more是「多」，than是「少」，而中文中的「與其」是少，「不如」是多，所以翻譯時候需要顛倒。
例1：Your son is more shy than unfriendly.
譯文：你兒子與其說是不友好，不如說是害羞。
例2：Science depends far less on the experiments it prepares than on the preparedness of the minds of the men who watch the experiments.
譯文：科學與其說是依賴於它所準備的實驗，不如說更依賴於實驗觀察者有所準備的頭腦。s more shy than unfriendly.
例3：Science moves forward not so much through the insights of great men of genius as because of more ordinary things like improved techniques and tools.
譯文：科學的發展，與其說源於天才偉人的真知灼見，不如說源於改進的技術和工具等更為普通的東西。
2、no than
Mary is no morebeautiful than Jane. 各位可以來做一下選擇題：
1)瑪麗比簡漂亮。
2)簡比瑪麗漂亮。
3)瑪麗和簡都漂亮。
4)瑪麗和簡都不漂亮。
公布答案：no more...than，not any more than表示"兩者都不"，"不比…更"。因此，上面那個句子Mary is no more beautiful than Jane.意思就是「瑪麗和簡都不漂亮」，你可以翻譯得漂亮點：瑪麗也沒有比簡漂亮到哪裡去~~~ (這麼說你就得罪兩個人了~~)
再給幾個例句：
1)The heart is no moreintelligent than the stomach, for they are both controlled by the brain.
譯文：心臟和胃一樣無智力可言，因為它們都是由大腦控制的。
2)Jack is in the habit of walking off with things; he is no better thanathief.
譯文：傑克有順手牽羊的習慣，他簡直就是個小偷(他和小偷一樣的不好)
【注意】這裡no better than 就是no more good than，只不過沒有more good一說
3)No one can hold back the tide of revolution any more thana man with a broom can hold a flood that has burst the dam.
譯文：任何人都無法阻擋革命洪流，正如一個人不能拿著掃帚擋住決堤的洪水一樣。
【注意】這裡no more than變體成為了not ...any more than，我們知道，no = not any，本句話開頭沒有not one一說，只能說no one
3、rather than
* 很多情況下是一個表示否定的詞組，譯成"而不是"，例如：
1)He, rather than,you is responsible for the loss.
譯文：損失由他而不是你負責。
2)I see a world in which there will continue to be conflict but where competition between great peoples will build rather thandestroy.
譯文：我看到了一個世界，衝突將繼續存在其中，但偉大民族間的競爭會有助於建設，而不是導致毀滅。
* 有時候rather than在句子開頭，這時候可以先翻譯rather than部分，即「……不是……，(而)是……」，也可譯為「與……不同，……」。例如：
3)Rather thana punishment or a burden, work is the opportunity to realize one's potential.
譯文：工作不是懲罰，也不是負擔，工作為個人潛力的發揮提供機會。
4)Rather thancloaking his exit in the usual vague excuses, he came right out and said he was leaving "to pursue my goal ofrunning a company."
譯文：與平時常用模糊的理由來掩飾辭職不同，他直接了當地指出自己離開就是為了去追求「經營一家公司的目標」。
4、other than 一般表示 different from或except,即"不同於，除了"。
1)There was nothing they could do other thanspend the night in the temple.
譯文：他們除了在廟宇裡過夜別無它法。
2)Holidays other thanthose in this brochure do not have free places for children.
譯文：小冊子上沒寫的節假日裡小孩不免費。
3)Plants which refine crude ores are often located in countries other than those in which the crude ores are mined.
譯文：提煉礦石的廠房通常不設在採礦石的國家，而設在其他國家。
* 活學活用，引申一下：
4)The new arrival was no (none) other thanthe manager.
下劃線部分，一般視作一個詞組來記，意思是「就是、正是」，所以這句話意思是：「來的人就是經理」。
BUT，我也可以把no和other than分開記憶，即：「來的人什麼都不是，除了是經理」。那麼意思還是「來的人就是經理」。
