看這本書沒一會兒便想到以前看過的神經漫遊者以及菲利普迪克的幾本。它們的共同點不是別的，是全都很難讀。語句不通上下文不連貫的情形隨處可見，以至於我情不自禁地猜測，莫非這是科幻小說中一種特定的語言風格？一個流派？
醫生的推測是，伯爾頓也是中毒反應。兩天後，伯爾頓解釋說，就是在他回來之後看上去已恢復平靜的情況下，他一會兒都不願意離開考察隊核心火箭的內艙，他一次也不想走近窗戶看一眼大洋，他很想寫一個報告，報導一下他這次飛行的經歷。伯爾頓堅持認為，這是一件極為重大的事。按照航天局的鑑定意見，這份報告被定性為由大氣層氣體導致精神中毒，從而產生了疾病反應，這樣一來，整個事件就不用列入索拉裡斯研究史中，而被歸入伯爾頓的個人病歷中，這件事就算交待過去了。
看到這段話後終於忍不住想要去查查原文是怎麼寫的。不過原文是波蘭文，譯者從德文轉譯。我既不懂波蘭文也不懂德文，只好查英文版作為對照。上面那段話的英文版 ( translated by Bill Johnston. 看到人有說原作者不認同英文版，要求中文從德文轉譯。不過作者在06年去世。查到報導，當時只有一個很早的從法語轉譯的英文版，而Bill Johnston這個英文版是11年出的，直接從波蘭文翻譯的) 是這樣的：
The doctors suspected that Berton too was suffering from poisoning. Though he ostensibly regained his senses, he refused even for a moment to leave the expedition’s main rocket ship; nor would he go up to the window, from which the ocean could be seen. After two days Berton declared he wished to submit a report concerning his flight. He insisted, claiming it was a matter of the utmost importance. When this report was examined by the expedition’s advisory board it was determined to be the morbid product of a mind poisoned by the toxic gases of the atmosphere. As such it was included not in the records of the expedition but in Berton’s medical case history, upon which the whole matter was closed.
這一段的中英文翻譯有多少不一致的地方？每一處都是英文更通順更合理。
最主要的，引起閱讀障礙的是這兩處：
「兩天後，伯爾頓解釋說」，這裡與後面的內容顯然連不上。按英文版，它應該在「他一次也不想走近窗戶看一眼大洋」之後，接「他很想寫一個報告」。這樣就通順了。（"declared" 和「解釋」也對不上，不過這個相對來說只能算稍微影響語感的小問題）
「他很想寫一個報告」，讀到這裡的時候疑惑既然「想寫」，那意思是沒有寫？那後面的「這份報告」是哪來的？而對應的英文是 "he wished to submit a report"，他想提交一份報告。這就毫無問題了。
僅從這一小段來看，本書的難讀，問題顯然出在中文翻譯上。
