Pigeonhole的意思是定型，分類，也就是我們常說的輕率地給人貼標籤這樣的含義。英文釋義：To pigeon-hole someone or something means to decide that they belong to a particular class or category, often without considering all their qualities or characteristics.
這個用語的起源很有趣。幾百年前，許多歐洲人會飼養鴿子當肉鴿食用，他們把鴿子養在牆上的小洞裡，這個洞就稱為pigeon hole（鴿洞）。大約到了18世紀末，辦公室隔間裡存放檔案和記錄的地方也稱為pigeon hole，因為外觀跟早期的鴿洞很像。由於這些洞是用來將資料分類的方式，因此這個用語就發展衍生，最後到了19世紀，成為一個動詞用法。
